DocuSign Envelope ID: 9E1F355E- 98F3 -4A36- 9415- DF30F26C06BE
Chapel Hill -based CTC believes that women's impact on history,
science, mathematics, activism, civil rights, and more are too little
known. Through performance, CTC elevates the stories of
remarkable women and brings them into the collective
consciousness for all young learners.
CTC's new play will be the second addition to its catalogue of plays,
with the ultimate goal of having ten to twelve such plays available for
schools and other organizations to present. CTC's first play —
"Sally's Ride: To Space and Beyond! ", about Sally Ride and other
women who have contributed to space exploration — was performed
at Carrboro Elementary, Frank Porter Graham Elementary, and
Weatherstone Elementary during the 2017 -18 school year.
Similar to "Sally's Ride: To Space and Beyond! ", CTC's new 45-
minute play will be suitable for K - 5 graders and will incorporate
original music, movement, and audience participation. Performances
will take place in elementary schools, libraries, science festivals, and
more. Although the full play is 45 minutes, it will also be possible to
pull out blocks of the play to be performed in smaller modules. This
will allow smaller pieces of the play to be used by schools to perform
on their own as well - for example a school chorus could perform one
or all of the songs, a 4th grade science class could learn a 15- minute
block of the play and perform for other classes, CTC could perform a
small block of the play during a science festival where the full play
would be too long, etc. This modular approach will allow for the
stories and concepts within the play to reach as many as possible in
our community, and will also allow young people to participate in the
story telling through their own performing of parts of the play.
Script writing and music composition will begin mid -July 2018 with a
November 30, 2018 deadline for development to be finalized.
Rehearsals will take place during December 2018 and January 2019,
and performances will be ready for schools and the larger community
in February 2019.
CTC is a member of CAPS and the UAC, and receive some
elementary school bookings through those organizations. CTC also
heavily markets the play to elementary schools in the Chapel
Hill / Carrboro City school system, as well as Orange County. In
addition to elementary schools, CTC is also working with venues
such as the Chapel Hill Library and the Morehead Planetarium to
consider showcasing the play as part of other programs.
