DocuSign Envelope ID: 7DC99939- D085- 44DF- A6AF- 5D8ACFC45087
Audience Description Each performer will present two separate shows — one for the
younger Kindergarten -2nd Grade students and another for the older
3rd -5th Grade students (536 students total). The artists will tailor the
style, themes and content of their performances to each audience, as
appropriate. Each student audience will reflect the rich diversity our
school population. Specifically, over 240 (45 %) of our students are
non - Caucasian, including 16% African American, 15%
Hispanic /Latino, 8% Multiracial, and 6 %Asian /Asian American. These
numbers also include 60 students (111/6) who are classified as English
Language Learners and 161 students (30 %) who qualify for free and
reduced lunch, which indicates that nearly a third of our students are
dealing with issues related to poverty.
Location Description All performances take place in the MES gymnasium, which features a
raised stage for the artists. Students sit in rows on the gymnasium
floor, younger in front and older in back, so that all students have a
view of the stage. The gymnasium floor is at the same level as the
rest of the school hallways, and is accessible to students or other
participants who are in wheelchairs or who have other physical
disabilities. We also have access to an audio - visual system and /or
lighting controls that may be needed to accommodate students or
other participants who have hearing or visual disabilities. As always,
our school personnel will work with the artists and /or make other
adjustments to meet the accessibility and accommodation needs of
all students.
Artist Description The MES PTA Cultural Arts program chair worked closely with
professionals at the ArtsCenter and advisers in our school
community to consider our options and choose the performances to
offer during the 2018 -19 school year. We carefully selected
performances to respond to the needs of our students. The criteria
for selection include strong multidisciplinary linkages to the school's
curriculum, particularly in arts education, language arts, science,
math, social studies, and positive behavior; and being representative
of a variety of cultures and art forms, such as dance, music, drama,
storytelling and poetry, among others. The three selected performers
include:
- Number Drummer - Presenting a one -of -a -kind interactive
production where the entire audience "drums" up math to create a
spectacular rhythmic performance
- Queen Nur - Presenting lively, engaging and poignant tales from the
African and African American Oral Tradition that convey lasting
values -based lessons of individuality, courage, anti - bullying and
much more
- Flamenco Carolina - Presenting the flamenco art form of song,
dance and instrumental music associated with the folkloric music
traditions of Southern Spain.
