Made up of all volunteers from a very diverse cross - <br />section of the Triangle area community, the band performs at all <br />kinds of events like cultural festivals, fundraisers, corporate events, <br />private parties, and night club venues. The musical director, Caique <br />Vidal and his assistant, Bahby Banks are both African American, and <br />the musical director is a Afro - Brazilian immigrant. <br />The first Batala group was founded over 20 years ago in Paris, <br />France and has since spread to over 40 groups internationally and <br />features over 1200 drummers. The Durham group formed in late 2015 <br />and began performing in early 2016 and features over 30 members <br />with more joining. They have performed at the Bull City Ride + Run <br />benefiting Habitat for Humanity, an Earth Day celebration at Brumley <br />Forest Preserve for the Triangle Land Conservancy's park opening <br />event, Book Harvest's annual fundraiser, the Durham Holiday Parade, <br />and many other events. Video at http: / /bataladurham.com <br />Magic Of African Rhythm <br />Teli Shabu currently runs the Teli Shabu African Drum Institute and is <br />the Musical Director, and Lead Percussionist of Shabutaso and The <br />Magic of African Rhythm. Born in Liberia, West Africa, Teli is the <br />Musical Director and lead percussionist for The Magic of African <br />Rhythm. He teaches drum class for adults and youth throughout <br />North Carolina. He has traveled the U.S. and West Africa studying <br />percussions and kora with masters. Awarded Best Original Music <br />2012 for his work on The Brothers Size at Manbites Dog Theater by <br />Indy Weekly Magazine, his kora playing was recorded for the score of <br />I Love My Hair On Good Days Then Again When it's Defiant and <br />Impressive in March of the same year. Teli was most recently <br />featured on Kim Arrington's sophomore album Getting II Yes. <br />Mabinti Shabu has been dancing all of her life, touring and <br />performing with dance companies in NYC and abroad. Mabinti is a <br />master Balafon and Ngoni player. She is currently recording a new <br />album. She plays djembe and dunduns with Valerie Naranjo, The <br />African American Dance Ensemble, and many more. <br />These artists were selected to bring excellent drumming and dancing <br />to the parade and to attract a culturally diverse audience. We are <br />hiring stilt walkers, jugglers, and musicians.
