PUBLIC HEALTH TASK FORCE 2004: PRELIMINARY RECOMMENDATIONS <br />PUBLIC HEALTH IMPROVEMENT PLAN <br />CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATIONS: PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE (PREVNAR) <br />Need. Addressed /Rationale <br />Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria harm more people in the United States each year than all the other <br />vaccine - preventable disease combined. The pneumococcal bacteria causes invasive disease (mostly <br />blood infection or bacteremia) and meningitis (inflammation of the brain and the spinal cord coverings). <br />It is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in the U.S.; hitting children < 1 year of age hardest. The <br />burden of pneumococcal - related diseases is about 5,013,900 reported cases per year nationwide. These <br />diseases cause 25 % -40% of middle ear infections in children. About 200 U.S. children die each year <br />from pneumococcal disease. Demand for the universal distribution of Prevnar is high among parents and <br />physicians. <br />Infrastructure /Capacity Improvement <br />Purchase and distribute pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar) for children. CDC's National <br />Immunization Program will cover the cost for vaccinating 68.2% of the eligible population. An <br />estimated 31.8% of the children are not covered by federal funding sources and will receive this vaccine <br />through this request. <br />buagez <br />$13,113,249 in State appropriations for the purchase of pneumococcal conjugate. vaccine. No local <br />funding is requested and no additional Full Time Equivalents.are.required.. <br />
