DocuSign Envelope ID: 3919C1C2- 823F- 44C8- ACD9- A50E6E1875B5 Project /Program On the occasion of the Hispanic Heritage month and Columbus Day, Summary EL FUEGO Early Music Ensemble presents a concert entitled: "The Last Conquistador" (The Last Conqueror), narrative, music, poetry and art from Spain's Golden Age and New Spain colonies (Today's Mexico and New Mexico, USA), surrounding the time of the explorer and Conquistador Juan de Onate y Salazar (1550- 1626). The concert will be performed with period instruments by Salome Sandoval, voice, vihuela, baroque guitar and artistic direction; Roman Testroet, voice; Molly Barnes and Robbie Link viols; Jennifer Streeter and Douglas Young, early winds. The concert will be in historical fiction theatrical form and will take the audience back in time to mid 1500 Spain, when a soldier chose to become part of the Conquistador Onate's army and travel to the New World. The attending community of all ages will be able to listen to sacred and secular polyphony by Portuguese composer Gaspar Fernandes (1566 - 1629), who was active in Colonial Mexico, and whose music included texts in Nahuatl, the language of Mexico's indigenous people. Musical selections will be alternated with poetry in the Romance form by Spanish playwright and poet Lope de Vega (1562 -1635) and the Liturgical and Secular plays derived from Spanish sources, found in the region that is known today as New Mexico, USA. Translations and art will be projected onto a screen, including painting, sculpture and architecture from colonial Spain, Mexico and New Mexico. Community Impact Audiences of all ages and backgrounds will be able to learn more about the historical frame, social aspects and arts surrounding 1500 - 1600s Spain and the New Colonies through music. People of Hispanic heritage will get an unique look at their ancestors, their music and influence in today's USA culture. At the Carrbory Century Center, we expect a size audience of about 250 -400 people. Artist Experience El Fuego (meaning `fire' in Spanish) has impressed audiences with their synthesis of early music and folk styles; their versatility as singers and multi - instrumentalists is shown in their unique repertoire from Spain and the New World colonies. Now based in Chapel Hill, NC (before in Boston, MA), Artistic Director Salome Sandoval has received wide acclaim for singing while providing her own continuo parts on lutes and guitars; together with period instrumentalists, El Fuego creates an unusually rich sound, full of melodic and rhythmic excitement in their performance of ViIlancicos, Xacaras and other sacred vocal repertoire, as well as stage music, keeping the flame of little -known musical masters burning in the 21st century.
