DocuSign Envelope ID: 123032AC- 70BA -4E92- 9348- 95F9CDA1629A
Artist Description Pline Mounzeo started playing music in the Congo at a young age,
and his interest in his country's traditional rhythm with the Ngoma
drum developed quickly. In 2005, Mounzeo joined a Senegalese
dance company, and the following year the company won first place
in Theatre de la Cite's Sixth Edition of Choreographic Encounters of
Africa and the Indian Ocean. They went on tour to perform in theaters
and festivals of seven African countries in 2007. Mounzeo developed
into an artistic instructor by leading workshops in Montessori
schools in France. He shared his gift of dance at Eolo where he
taught young people with autism. His work with Eolo led to his
opportunity to train with musicians and singers of the Opera de Lyon
which expanded to his audiences. Mounzeo's rising professional
career in modern contemporary dance inspired his desire to
experience new cultures offered by several countries in Europe and
in Africa. In 2008, he decided to discover the culture of the United
States and took his music and knowledge of Congolese tradition to
share with it. Since his time in the United States, he has performed
and taught traditional Congolese drumming and dance at
universities, music festivals and artist camps from California to New
York and many states in between. He participates in UNC Hospital's
Door -to -Door Healing Arts program that brings professional
performing and visual artists to patients, staff and caregivers at UNC
Hospitals. Mounzeo's first album was titled, "Bou Nzenza," translated
from the Kongo language to mean "Foreign." Mounzeo was chosen
for this performance and residency to offer students perspective into
another culture through a fun, engaging format. His experience and
connection with his audience creates an optimal learning
environment for children.
Are you hiring Yes
multicultural artists
with the requested
funds from this
grant?
What is the total
amount you will pay
the multicultural
artists with the funds
you receive from this
grant?
How will the
project /program be
publicized and
promoted to reach
intended
participants?
1250
The Hillsborough Elementary PTA will publicize the residency on the
Weekly Wire, an electronic newsletter sent out at the beginning of
each week. Third grade teachers will also include the residency
information in their weekly classroom newsletters and on their class
web sites. In addition, Pline Mounzeo will also provide packets for
students to take home during the residency so families can be
involved in the experience.
