Estes Hills Elementary School staff
oversees logistics during the events. If awarded, we will use the grant
to fund a portion of the artists' fees for 6 performances during the
2018 -19 school year: Children's Theatre of Charlotte: Rapunzel (week
of October 15- 19/$1000 for one performance for K -2nd); Children's
Theatre of Charlotte: Spelling 2 -5 -5 (week of October 15- 19/$1000 for
one performance for 3rd -5th); Flamenco Carolina (week of February
11- 15/$1700 for two performances, one for K -2nd and one for 3rd -
5th); and Poetry Alive! (week of January 7- 11/$1300 for two
performances, one for K -2nd and one for 3rd -5th).
Project Start Date September 1, 2018
(no earlier than July
1, 2018)
Project End Date (no June 30, 2019
later than June 30,
2019)
Project Goals Over the past few years, income to our PTA and thus the Cultural
Enrichment budget has decreased. This has been due in part to a
decrease in the sustaining funds historically provided by the PTA
Thrift Shops, and a decline in state funding for education (which has
resulted in greater demands on the PTA's budget). Combined with
rising costs, we have only been able to fund 3 performances per
grade for the past two years (and projected for next year) as opposed
to 4 performers per year in the past. As a result, grant funds are
greatly needed and appreciated in order to provide our students with
cultural opportunities that they otherwise might not experience. Our
goal as the PTA is to provide necessary resources to support the
highest quality educational environment possible, including exposure
to the performing arts. The Cultural Enrichment program would not
exist at Estes Hills without the PTA's funding and support.
Audience Description Our intended audience is the entire Estes Hills Elementary student
body, kindergarten through fifth grade. Our student body is fairly
evenly divided along gender lines (54% Male / 46% Female), and has a
diverse racial composition: White (56 0/6), Hispanic (14 0/6), African
American (119/6), Asian (111/6), American Indian (0.4 0/6), and Multi - Racial
(7 0/6). At Estes Hills, 29% of students are Economically
Disadvantaged, and 9% are Limited English Proficient.
Location Description Performances will take place in the gymnasium during the regular
school day. For space considerations and developmental reasons,
we divide the audience into two age groups consisting of the younger
students (kindergarten through 2nd grade) and the older students
(3rd grade through 5th grade). The gymnasium is accessible by
wheelchair.
