DocuSign Envelope ID: 540215DB- 7ADD- 4C8E- AF46- 2083D1568D95 <br />Project /Program We are seeking funds from Orange County Arts Commission to <br />Summary continue bringing the arts to middle and high school students in <br />Orange County during out -of- school time. Students will participate in <br />weekly spoken word poetry and writing workshops over the course of <br />30 weeks during the 2018 -19 school year. An anthology of their <br />writings will be available digitally; if funding is available, a limited <br />number of copies may be printed. They will also have opportunities to <br />showcase their work to the wider community. <br />Boomerang is strongly committed to integrating the arts into daily <br />programming, bringing meaningful exposure to the arts to a cohort <br />of students whose opportunities become increasingly limited in <br />middle and high school. Additionally, exposure to the arts can open <br />underserved youth to new opportunities, both in terms of education <br />and employment. <br />From the arts- focused projects Boomerang has implemented over <br />the last 18 months, students have overwhelmingly responded <br />positively to being engaged, active participants in not only using the <br />arts as a medium for self- expression but as active "purveyors" of the <br />arts to the wider community. <br />This project is based on "creative youth development" principles, <br />intentionally integrating the arts with positive youth development <br />principles, supporting creativity and building critical learning and life <br />skills. For underserved youth, the arts can promote engagement, <br />offering educational opportunities that can set the stage for social <br />change and development of youth voice /self- expression, and <br />allowing them to engage their communities through art that reflects <br />and is relevant to their lives. <br />Project Start Date July 1, 2018 <br />(no earlier than July <br />1, 2018) <br />Project End Date (no June 30, 2019 <br />later than June 30, <br />2019) <br />Project Goals The goal of this project is to engage youth through the interplay <br />between art education, creation and performance. Specifically: <br />1) Help youth gain a voice through writing /poetry that documents <br />their experiences. <br />2) Encourage reflection on the subjects of their writings, and gain <br />understanding of their circumstances and the forces that shape <br />them. <br />3) Inspire them to share their creative pieces through performance. <br />
