Fikes, ext. 2490; <br />Gwen Price, ext. 2885 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To approve the submission of a funding proposal to the North Carolina TANF <br />Housing Program for additional funding for the TANF Housing Program and authorize the Chair <br />to sign a letter of support on behalf of the Board. <br />BACKGROUND: In December 1999, Orange County received a TANF (Temporary Assistance <br />to Needy Families) Housing Program award to help TANF eligible families secure affordable <br />housing through rental assistance and/or other housing related support services. The County <br />was awarded $312,495 in TANF block grant funds for this program for an eighteen-month <br />period beginning in January 2000 and ending June 30, 2001. <br />In March 2000, the BOCC approved an Implementation Plan that included entering into a <br />contractual agreement with Gee Associates, Inc. to provide overall management, supervision, <br />and case management services for the Orange County TANF Housing Program. The program <br />has been operational since late March 2000 and there has been a great deal of interest in the <br />program from the community. A current Status Report detailing the program's progress is <br />incorporated into the attached Proposal Summary. <br />The N.C. Division of Social Services has notified the County that an additional $3 million dollars <br />is available for existing TANF Housing Programs. The maximum amount available per county is <br />$500,000. Additional funding would allow us to extend the current program for an additional 12 <br />months -July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. The current program partners are interested in <br />applying for the additional funding to continue this program. <br />Proposals are due on November 3,,2000 and must be accompanied by a letter of support from <br />the local Board of County Commissioners. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The program requires a 50% cash match or $250,000 for an application <br />requesting $500,000 in TANF funding.
