Human Services Advisory Commission — Minutes — July 16, 2001 Page 3 of 5 <br />There was discussion about notable achievements and notable gaps that have occurred in Orange County since <br />ae 1989 Poverty Forum. Staff was directed to go through the 1989 Poverty Forum Report to identify what has <br />been accomplished and what hasn't. This would be very useful for the planning of this year's Forum. <br />Mr. Block asked if staff still has the evaluations from the 2000 Forum, to which Ms. Barber replied in the <br />affirmative. Mr. Block said that these could be used for constructive criticism for this year's Forum, to which <br />Ms. Wash agreed. Staff was directed to send copies of the evaluations from 2000 Forum to all members well <br />before the August meeting. <br />Working Luncheon at Forum Ms. Echols said that the working luncheon, which was used at the 2000 Forum, <br />was a great improvement because it encouraged people to stay for the breakout sessions. Ms. Echols introduced <br />the subject of how to encourage attendees to stay all day, also. She said that the idea is to make it so interesting <br />that they want to stay for the entire Forum. <br />Ideas for Encouraging Participants to Remain for the Entire Forum <br />• Giving away Volunteer Coffee /Soup Mugs and filling them with candy <br />• Offering attendees Continuing Education Units (CELT) Certificates upon completion of the Forum <br />A MOTION WAS MADE BY Ms. Wash,, AND SECONDED BY Mr. Thompson, to apply for <br />Continuing Education Unit Certification for the 2001 Forum. VOTE: UNANIMOUS APPROVAL. <br />fhank You Letters for Speakers Mr. Block asked if the Forum speakers receive recognition with a <br />certificate? Ms. Echols said that they do receive a thank you letter. <br />VIDEO TAPING OF THE FORUM Ms. Hinton asked if the Forum should be video - taped? Ms. Wash asked <br />what that would be used for. Ms. Hinton explained that the Forum video could be aired on the local Cable <br />People's Channel. Ms. Hinton explained that the cost is about $200. She suggested video - taping the morning <br />session and the afternoon recap. <br />SCHOLARSHIPS Commissioner Jacobs asked if there was a way to help those who cannot afford the cost of <br />the Forum, and Ms. Hinton replied that this has been part of the registration process in the past. Commissioner <br />Jacobs said that we should advertise this also. He said it would be especially helpful this year since the theme is <br />"Poverty." <br />NUMBER OF ATTENDEES EXPECTED Ms. Wash asked when will we have a pretty good idea of how <br />many attendees there will be?
