HUMAN SERVICES ICES ADVISORY COMMISSION <br />MINUTES <br />June 28, 1999 Page 1 of 3 <br />1 <br />2 <br />3 The regularly - scheduled meeting of the Human Services Advisory Commission was held <br />4 on Monday, June 28, 1999 at 5:30 p.m. at the Southern Human Services Center, in <br />5 Chapel Hill, N.C. <br />6 <br />7 MEMBERS PRESENT (Those Present Are Bold And Underlined): Judy Cox, Co- <br />8 Chair, Louise Echols, Co- chair, Natalie Ammarell, Christine Barfield, Marvin Block, <br />9 Dee Gamble, Mel Hurston, Barry Jacobs, Lynette Jeffries, Deborah Kinert, Geno <br />10 Pichette, Sue Russell, Herschel Slater. and Donald David Thompson, Jr. <br />11 <br />12 STAFF PRESENT (Those Present Are Bold And Underlined: Albert Kittrell; Nancy <br />13 Martin. —°- <br />14 <br />15 QUEST(S) PRESENT: Annette Moore, Director, Orange County Human Rights and <br />16 Relations Department <br />17 <br />18 WELCOME AND MEMBER UPDATE: The members each introduced themselves, -and <br />19 updated the others on their department's activities. Mr. Mel Hurston, one of two newly - <br />20 appointed members, was present and introduced himself. <br />21 <br />22 MINUTES OF May 17, 1999 Were approved by consensus as presented. <br />23 <br />24 MEMBERSHIP Membership issues were discussed. Two new members were <br />25 appointed by the Board of County Commissioners on June 1, 1999: Mr. Mel Hurston, <br />26 representing the Board of Health, and Ms. Natalie Ammarell, representing the Interfaith <br />27 Council. Ms. Dee Gamble, as representative of the Board of Social Services, was <br />28 reappointed on June 21, 1999. There remains a vacancy for a representative of <br />29 Communities -In- Schools (CIS) and one vacancy for a representative of O.P.C. Mental <br />30 Health. There are also two "at- large" vacancies. <br />31 <br />32 During the discussion, it was emphasized that northern Orange County needs to be <br />33 better represented. Staff will continue efforts to recruit citizens from northern Orange <br />34 County and to remind CIS and OPC staff to make a recommendation. <br />35 <br />36 The applications of Ann M. Edison, Steven R. Moore, and Rebecca A. Young were <br />37 discussed. A unanimous decision was made to recommend to the Board of County <br />38 Commissioners to appoint Mr. Moore and Ms. Young to at -large positions. <br />39 <br />40 RESOLUTION REGARDING CIVIL DISCOURSE IN ORANGE COUNTY On May 4, <br />41 1999, the Orange County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the attached <br />42 resolution entitled "A Resolution Regarding Civil Discourse in Orange County," and <br />43 requested that this resolution be forwarded to all elected officials in Orange County, to <br />44 the Mayor of each municipality and to the Chairs of the County Advisory Boards and <br />45 Commissions. <br />46 <br />47 Motion was made by Mel Hurston, seconded by Lynette Jeffries, and unanimously <br />48 approved to adopt "A Resolution Regarding Civil Discourse in Orange County."
