HUMAN SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION <br />MINUTES <br />Co P,,eFCToAPRIL 19, 1999 <br />o� <br />3 The regularly - scheduled meeting of the Human Services Advisory Commission was held <br />4 on Monday, April 19, 1999 at 5:30 pm at the Southern Human Services Center in <br />5 Chapel Hill, N.C. <br />6 <br />7 MEMBERS PRESENT (Those present are bold and underlined): Judy Cox, Co- <br />b Chair; Louise Echols, Co- chair; Christine Barfield, Marvin Block, Beverly Foster, <br />9 Dee Gamble, Victoria Hain, Barry Jacobs, Lynette Jeffries, Deborah Kinert, Hazel <br />10 Lunsford, Geno Pichette, Sue Russell, Herschel Slater, Karen Taylor, Donald David <br />11 Thompson, Jr. <br />12 <br />13 STAFF PRESENT (Those present are bold and underlined): Albert Kittrell; Nancy <br />14 Martin. <br />15 <br />16 VISITORS PRESENT: Anita Daniels, United Way; Linda Templeton, Triangle <br />17 United Way; Cindy Torgelson, interested citizen. <br />18 <br />19 WELCOME AND MEMBER UPDATE: The members each introduced themselves, and <br />20 updated the others on their department's activities. Albert Kittrell announced the <br />21 dedication of the Skills Development Center on Sunday, April 25, 1999, at 3:00 p.m. and <br />22 invited everyone to attend. <br />23 <br />24 Mr. Kittrell said that Commissioner Barry Jacobs expressed his regrets that he could not <br />25 attend tonight's meeting because he is out of town. <br />26 <br />27 Judy Cox announced that Crop Walk, sponsored by Orange Congregations in Mission <br />28 (OCIM), will be held on April 25, 1999. She said that twenty -five percent of the <br />29 proceeds will go to support the Meals -on- Wheels Program. <br />30 <br />31 Marvin Block, from the Advisory Board on Aging, talked about the need for space at the <br />32 Senior Center at the Galleria in Chapel Hill. The Center is trying to accommodate every <br />33 person who signs up for activities. He also reported on the Wellness Program, which is <br />34 very successful. <br />35 <br />36 MINUTES OF JANUARY 11, 1999 were approved as corrected. The <br />37 MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 15, 1999 and the MINUTES OF MARCH 22, 1999 <br />38 were approved as presented. <br />39 <br />40 UNITED WAY COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT Ms. Anita Daniels, of the Triangle United <br />41 Way, made a presentation on the upcoming Community Assessment. This will be a <br />42 telephone survey canvassing 600 citizens at random about the needs of the community. <br />43 A new approach will be used this year to assess the County's strengths, as well as gaps <br />44 in the services. The North Carolina State Center for Urban Affairs, which was created to <br />45 conduct research for government entities, will be conducting the survey.
