<br />A regular meeting of the Human Services Advisory Commission was held on
<br />January 14, 2002, at the Government Services Center, 200 South Cameron Street,
<br />Hillsborough, North Carolina. The meeting was called to order by Co -Chair Rosetta
<br />Wash at 5:36 p.m.
<br />MEMBERS PRESENT: Robin Barnhill; Marvin Block; Mary Bowe; Louise Echols; Melvin Hurston; Lois Kinzie
<br />(representing Partnership for Young Children, sitting in for Sue Russell); David Thompson (arrived at 5:50
<br />p.m.); Pat Vandiviere; Rosetta Wash.
<br />MEMBERS ABSENT: Barry Jacobs; Sue Russell; Rebecca Young.
<br />STAFF PRESENT: Sharron Hinton; Nancy Paciga.
<br />STAFF ABSENT: Corinthia Barber.
<br />GUEST: Betty B. Matthews, nominated by Fletcher Barber, Director of Cooperative Extension
<br />Service, to represent the Cooperative Extension Service.
<br />Establishment of Quorum: Co -Chair Wash announced that a quorum was present.
<br />2. Additions or Changes to the Agenda :
<br />The minutes of November 19, 2001 were moved from Item 6a to 3. by Co -Chair Wash.
<br />3. Minutes of November 19, 2001 were approved as corrected.
<br />4. Election of Officers for 2002 :
<br />The Nominating Committee (Louise Echols and Mel Hurston) presented a proposed slate of officers for 2002.
<br />The proposed officers were, Rosetta Wash, Co- Chair, and David Thompson, Co- Chair. Mr. Thompson had not
<br />yet arrived. Mr. Hurston moved that the nominations be accepted, seconded by Robin Barnhill. VOTE:
<br />UNANIMOUS APPROVAL.
<br />Mel thanked Ms. Wash, and said that, in spite of her work responsibilities and home life, she still accepted the
<br />Co- Chairship for another year. Ms. Wash said that she was pleased to do it.
<br />5. Welcome New Member and Member Comments
<br />Co -Chair Wash welcomed Ms. Pat Vandiviere, who was appointed by the Board of County Commissioners on
<br />December 3, 2001, to represent OPC Area Programs.
<br />Ms. Vandiviere is retired from the Division of Mental Health in Raleigh. She said that she and her husband,
<br />Stewart, had moved to Orange County 40 years ago, raised their children here, and sent them to UNC. Her
<br />husband developed cancer and left her, and she misses him. She said she spends a good bit of time
<br />volunteering, for example with the Girl Scouts and, formerly, with a wilderness camp project called "North
<br />Town," which was run in conjunction with the Orange County Schools. Also, she worked on the board of the
<br />11dest daycare center in Orange County; with OPC Area Programs; and with her church as a representative at
<br />Protecting and Preserving People, Resources and Quality of Life
