ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: October 17, 2000
Action Agenda
Item No. ~_
SUBJECT: Training Funds for Caregiver Outreach Program
DEPARTMENT: Aging PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Adult Care Home Adv. Committee
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Funding Letter- Carol Woods Jerry Passmore ,ext. 2009
Funding Letter- TJCOG Cherie Rosemond, Chr. ADHAC
Jill AI-hafez, Regi~al Omsbudsman
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To receive $7,000 from Carol Woods Retirement Community and $950 from
TJCOG Regional Ombudsman Program far training of personal caregivers in non-profit adult
care homes.
BACKGROUND: The Master Aging Plan prepared for the County Commissioners identified
the improvement of quality of care as a major issue in long term care facilities, especially from
personal caregivers. The Master Aging Plan objective:a8 (Goal IV-A) recommends applying for
grant monies for projects that will improve the training and retention of CNA's (certified nursing
assistants) and PCA's (Personal Care Aides).
This would be a model caregiver training program that would be sponsored by the Dept. on
Aging, the Orange County Adult Care Home Advisory Committee and the TJCOG Regional
Ombudsman Program. The program would provide three sessions of training for 20
participants covering: (1) understanding the aging process and (2) developing communications
skills. The Program will be evaluated as to further training for other adult care home facilities.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funding from Carol Woods and TJCOG would cover all expenses for
the model training, including instruction, participant stipends, materials and certificates.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends approval of the Caregiver Outreach
Training Program and to accept the funds to implement the program.
