Animal Services News
October 15, 2014

TARGETED SPAY & NEUTER
• Animal Services staff addressed ALL Department of Social Services staff at a recent
department meeting about Orange County’s Community Spay/Neuter Program, thanking
them for their partnership and encouraging more referrals and opportunities.
• Our last Spay/Neuter Event, in coordination with Spay Neuter Assistance Program-NC (SNA-
NC), was September 30 and twenty-two (22) dogs and cats were sterilized.
• The next Spay/Neuter Event, in coordination with SNAP-NC, will be held on November 11,
2014.
• Eighty-four (84) dogs and cats were sterilized in the third quarter of the calendar year (July
through September) through the $20 Fix and no cost fix we offer in partnership with
AnimalKind.
• YTD 223 dogs and cats have been sterilized JUST through the AnimalKind partnership.

RABIES
• We are holding at 20 confirmed rabies cases (12 raccoons, 3 foxes, 3 bats and 2 skunks).
• Two hundred and thirty-eight (238) rabies vaccinations were given at the two rabies clinics
held in conjunction with World Rabies Day (September 28, 2014); and another fifty-eight (58)
vaccinations were given at a clinic since held then.
• The final low cost vaccination clinic of the year is scheduled for November 13, 2014
• The 2015 low cost rabies vaccination clinic will posted on line shortly thereafter and it is
expected to be similar to this year’s schedule.

DEER HUNTING WITH DOGS & OTHER ITEMS
• Deer hunting with dogs north of Interstate 85 begins along with the gun season for deer on
November 15 and runs through January 1.
• Animal Services is already distributing an informational brochure (attached) on rights and
responsibilities throughout the county.
• Animal Control Officers will again coordinate with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department,
County Communications and the enforcement officer from our area with the Wildlife Resource
Commission to address concerns arising from deer hunting with dogs.
• A new Animal Control Officer joined our staff last week and a new Animal Care Technician is
scheduled to start join us next week
• Staffing efforts are nevertheless continuing to fill three (3) vacant FTEs, two (2) animal control
officers, and one (1) animal care technician. .
• The department’s policies and protocols for receiving donations have been revised to more
exactly define responsibilities, indicate what material goods can be received and used in our
operations, and indicate what material good may be disposed of unless they can be
transferred to other animal organizations.
• A notable change is that we will no longer use dry food from open bags (unless they are “oops-
es” from commercial outlets) since there is good reason to believe they sometimes are
responsible for GI difficulties

Prepared by Bob Marotto,
Animal Services Director
