Orange County Animal Services 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 919-942-PETS (7387) MEMO To: Frank Clifton, County Manager From: Bob Marotto, Director of Animal Services Date: July 20, 2010 Re: Community Spay Neuter Fund Update I wanted to provide you with an update on the Community Spay Neuter Fund on the basis of the latest information we have received from AnimalKind, the non- profit organization with which we collaborate to offer The $20 Fix in Orange County in close coordination with the County’s Department of Social Services (DSS). As can be seen from the attached graphical summaries provided by AnimalKind, last year there was a significant increase both in the number of spay and neuter vouchers issued and in the number of these vouchers redeemed by County residents. In FY0809, more specifically, 222 vouchers were issued and 133 were redeemed; by comparison, in FY0910 327 vouchers were issued and 239 redeemed. Essentially, each redeemed voucher represents a sterilized dog or cat. As you will recall from discussions of Managing Pet Overpopulation: A Strategic Plan for Orange County, these are targeted sterilizations, i.e., spays and neuters that otherwise would not be expected to occur. They are expected to reduce the number of animals that need to be sheltered, control the costs of animal services, and curb the use of euthanasia as a means of population control. FY0910 performance outcomes were achieved on the basis of a $20,000 agreement with AnimalKind. These funds come from the County’s Community Spay Neuter Fund, created by the Board of County Commissioners in FY0708 on the basis of the cost differential of licenses for reproductive and sterilized dogs and cats. It should be noted here that the County was reimbursed $13,323 of the monies it expended in FY0910 from the Fund by the state through the North Carolina Spay - Neuter Program (NCGS 19A-60-65).
