2
Funding request (include amount of request and indicate other funding
sources):
The estimated cost (per NCDOT Division 7 staff) for the concrete,
and construction of the sidewalks and improvements to Homestead
Road for the recommended crass section is $688,300, That figure
does not include costs far right-of-way or utility relocation, which are
not known,
The NC Moving Ahead! program is a potential funding source for
construction of the sidewalks. NCDOT, to be consistent will
application of that program in other jurisdictions in Division 7,
requires that local jurisdictions obtain (and pay far) needed right-of-
way, and pay for utility relocation. NCDOT has expended all funding
for the current (2005) NC Moving Ahead! projects. The next program
will not be funded until after January 1, 2006.
Project location, scope and impact of program:
A map of the project and area is attached, The project is located in
the Joint Planning Area of Orange County and the Towns of Carrboro
and Chapel Hill, predominantly in the Transition Area of the Town of
Carrboro, with a small portion in the Transition Area of the Town of
Chapel Hill,
The need for the sidewalk is immediate.
The project was initiated by residents of neighborhoods to the north
and west of Homestead Road who are concerned about the safety of
school children that walk or bicycle to Chapel Hill High School, Smith
Middle School or Seawell Elementary School, The proposed
sidewalk would provide safe access for students in surrounding
neighborhoods to walk to the existing sidewalk along High School
Road to access those schools.
