Funding request (include amount of request and indicate other funding
sources):
Orange County is requesting State funding in the amount of $25,000.
All other funding would be provided by the Ccunty.
Project location, scope and impact of program:
The Northern Human Services Center is located on Highway 86
North of Hillsborough in Orange County. For several years, Orange
County, through a local Task Force, has been advancing a program
of redeveloping the Northern Human Services Center as a
community-based focal point. This program has included
infrastructure improvements now underway and other repairs and
renovations to address the overall appearance and serviceability of
the building. (The Center was an all-Black school during
segregation.) A branch library opened in 2003 and has been well
received by the community. Computer classes and tutorials are also
available in connection with Durham Tech Community College.
Interest has also been expressed in tapgrading the kitchen facilities to
handle catered events in the Cafetarium.
The goal has been tc re-construct and renovate underutilized space
at the Northern Human Services Center in Cedar Grove to become a
welcoming multi-ethnic and multi-cultural place where Recreation anc
Parks and the Department on Aging along with other agency and
community partners would offer classes, workshops, demonstrations,
and show/sales in pottery, glass blowing, and other art media,
Special emphasis would be on outreach to and involvement by the
elderly, disabled, and special populations whose work with the arts
has proved to be therapeutic and restorative, Neighbors and local
artists are excited by the prospect of promoting and developing the
arts as a form of recreational/play therapy, community revitalization,
cultural celebration, and economic stimulation.
