ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF GOMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: March 1, 2005
Action Agenda
Item No. 7- G
SUBJECT: Report on Human Services Issues Forum 2004
DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
Final Report on Forum 2004
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Linda Tuday & Pat Vandiviere,
Co-Chairs,
Human Services Advisory Commission
Gwen Harvey, Assistant County
Manager, ext 2300
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To receive the final report on the proceedings of the Human Services Issues
Forum held on September 8, 2004 by the Human Services Advisory Commission (HSAC) of the
Board of County Commissioners.
BACKGROUND: Each fall, the HSAC convenes a fonim on an issue of social significance to
the community. In 2004, it chose "Volunteerism" as the principal theme -specifically how to
connect with volunteers from all walks of life and keep them productively engaged and excited
about the organizational mission they choose to serve. Volunteerism is recognized as an
important value and social ethic within Orange County. During 2004, over 600 members of the
community volunteered their time and talents to Departmental human service programs and
projects that included youth athletics, companionship for seniors, library book sales, adolescent
parent mentoring, pet adoption events, and flu clinics or call centers. Outside agencies and
Departments report that volunteer time is worth upwards to $17 per hour.
The format for Forum 2004 was different from years past in that it featured an "Oprah-style"
interview setting instead of traditional, structured panels and introduced the participants to
"Graphic Recording". In Graphic Recording, an illustrator prepares a graphic rendering of the
meeting in words and pictures on large sheets of butcher block paper on the wall as it happens.
The "look" of this year's Final Report reflects the graphic recording process.
Attached is a copy of the bound Final Report that depicts the activities and outcomes of the
day. Copies will be forwarded to all presenters, participants, and interested partners.
