ATTACHMENT 4 14
U-2909 Widening Estes Drive from Greensboro Street to NC86
The Commission prefers an alignment that does not impact the Adams Tract, a
recent acquisition by the County and Town of Garrboro for natural area protection
and low-impact recreation, The Commission is also particularly concerned with
potential impacts of widening Estes Drive over Bolin Creek. North Carolina
Department of Transportation should design the bridge over Bolin Creek to allow
appropriate clearance for a proposed Bolin Creek Greenway trail that will connect an
Orange County park to trails in Chapel Hill and Garrboro, and for wildlife migration
along the creek. Finally, this project should include bicycle lanes and sidewalks,
since this is a critical road segment for the local bicycle and pedestrian network.
This would appear to offer opportunities to promote alternative transportation, such
as HOV, bus and bike lanes, as means of commuting between Chapel Hill and
Durham. While in Durham, the CFE would also note the need for a sensitive design
crossing for New Hope Creek, as previously discussed.
The following comments address proposed projects on Orange County's Priority List for
the 2006-2012 TIP or from recommendations from a study endorsed by the Board of
County Commissioners,
Priority List Proposed Prolect• Widen NC 86 (US 70 to NC 57)
This short segment of NC 86 could feature bike lanes and pedestrian paths to
augment alternative transportation possibilities in an already-congested
"bottleneck,"
D_CHC 2025 (& 2030) LRTP Project Widen NC 86 from Old NC 10 to US 70
Business
This short segment of NC 86 could feature bike lanes and pedestrian paths
(especially allowing for crossover of I-85) to augment alternative transportation
possibilities in an already-congested area for vehicle traffic.
14 of 3 pages
