Golan mentioned that the Hampton Point project was approved. While the
property is not in HPC's jurisdiction, Golan said that he would like to draft a letter
on behalf of the HPC to the Hillsborough commissioners and, the project
developers requesting that they do something to recognize the historic value of
the site. Golan suggested some sort of commendation marker, or green space
highlighting the events that took place at the site in 1865.
Golan asked for HPC support on the Hillsborough Military Academy project in
regards of preservation recommendations and, gave a brief history of the
property and buildings. Moon noted that the commandant's house is on the
National Register of Historic Places but that the other buildings are not. Golan to
keep HPC updated.
Golan also reported receiving a letter that calls for the HPC to provide input for
the annual BOCC planning retreat and suggested that it be addressed at the next
meeting. Moon reviewed the advisory board's role.
AGENDA ITEM #4: APPROVAL OF MINUTES
a. October 24, 2001
MOTION: Golan moved approval of the October 24, 2001 minutes with the changes noted
by Connor. Georgiade seconded the motion.
VOTE: Unanimous.
AGENDA ITEM #5: ITEMS FOR DECISION
Schedule for field trips
Moon reminded the group of the times previously set for site visits to the Cate Farm
property and the Little River Park and Natural Area and that Rich Shaw is planning to
provide tour assistance. Once the HPC has visited the two properties it can prepare
recommendations regarding stewardship for the various historic structures and send
those recommendations to the appropriate park workgroup. The dates of December 9th
at 2:00 for the Cate Farm and January 13th for the Little River Park were agreed upon.
The members discussed gathering location being here at 1:30 p.m. and the possibility of
a county vehicle tour bus.
b. Annual CLG Report
Moon reviewed our CLG status requirements and thanked everyone for participating in so
many preservation workshops this year. Moon asked the HPC for feed back on the three
most needed commission or staff training topics. Golan noted that he would like to see
more training on rural preservation issues, such as processing COAs for rural sites, ways
to protect and preserve open spaces, public relations within a rural context, ways of
presenting things to communities to get community involvement, and finally dealing with
elected officials. Connor suggested going through the process of applying for
designation as a Local Landmark District. Georgiade said that she would like to learn
about more about how to get the county to stabilize historic buildings on newly acquired
property.
Moon asked for any information on demolished or destroyed buildings. Golan mentioned
the Snipes house. Connor noted concerns about Chatwood barn that is actually a
relocated 18th century house. Staff to research if that building is part of National Register
Nomination. Cooper noted that abandoned store has been demolished at the
intersection of Hwy 49 & 86. A suggestion was made to seek cooperation from fire
departments for information about historic sites prior to demolition.
Draft November 28, 2001 HPC minutes Page 2 of 4
