Golan
reported talking with Cathleen Turner, of Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, about
the possibility of pursuing a joint architectural history publication with the Town of
Hillsborough. Moon summarized their progress on the book so far. Orange
County sponsored a countywide architectural survey in the early 1990s and hired
Rick Matteson, an architectural history consultant, to prepare a manuscript
suitable for publication based on the survey files. Matteson also rewrote a
number of file entries for use in the inventory section of the book.
More recently, the HPC began reviewing the inventory photos to select buildings
that offered a good representation of architectural forms and styles, as well as
important local families. After hearing that the Town of Hillsborough had
someone who wanted to publish a history of the town and surrounding
jurisdictions, it made sense to staff to pursue the idea of doing a joint publication
instead of two smaller works with substantial overlap. Another part of the appeal
of the partnership idea was the potential for more funding sources and more staff
expertise from other jurisdictions all of which would hopefully_ lead to a better final
product in less time.
The manuscript prepared by Rick Matteson would remain intact, and a similar
piece about the county seat of Hillsborough would be prepared as a separate
chapter. Staff would try to gather a little more social history about the crossroads
and rural communities, including African - American history to balance the volume
to better appeal to the general public. Staff would also prepare and insert interior
photos, floor plans and area maps as appropriate.
Draft November 28, 2001 HPC minutes Page 1 of 4
