Q •anfn A County Agrivu ttm al Q fi r"m;+
306 Revere Road
P. O. Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Attachment 3
MINUTES
Orange County Agricultural Summit Planning Meeting
Planning & Inspections Conference Room
October 23, 2001, 10:00am
Members present: Dr. Fletcher Barber, Jr., County Extension Director
Barry Jacobs, Orange County Commissioner
Karen McAdams, Agricultural Extension Agent
Michael Lanier, Agricultural Economic Development Coordinator
Tina Moon, ERCD
Kay Evans, Administrative Secretary
Welcome ....................................................... ............................... Dr. Fletcher Barber, Jr.
County Extension Director
Dr. Barber welcomed everyone to the meeting thanking them for attending. He then gave
everyone an agenda and list of the planning committee members. Dr. Barber stated that
the purpose of the meeting today is to set the date, time and focus for this year's
Agricultural Summit.
Proposed Program Activities ................................... ............................... Karen McAdams
Agricultural Extension Agent
Dr. Fletcher Barber, Jr.
County Extension Director
Dr. Barber stated that the feedback received from the farmers at last year's Agricultural
Summit was to do something different this year. The farmers would like for the meeting
to get back to something "hands -on ", such as tours. Maybe everyone could meet at a
central location, then get on buses to visit and see what is going on out in the county at
different locations. They would have lunch at one of those locations.
Karen added that one farmer felt that it was time to do something different, as the number
of farmers attending seems to drop each year. Karen stated that some felt if we have the
same format, they are not sure we will get many farmers there.
Karen stated that we could showcase what is being done in the county by others who
have diversified. Maybe do specialty tours such as the Southeast Vegetable and Fruit
.11
