The <br />program seeks to prepare students with <br />skills necessary to fill 50 new positions <br />that will become available at local <br />businesses over the next two years. <br />objectives for the project are: to <br />strengthen the HEATT /Agricultural <br />Systems program and implement the <br />HEATT /Construction Equipment Systems <br />program as a parallel concentration. <br />Servicing Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington <br />Counties <br />The Carolina Commerce and Technology <br />Center, Inc. (COMtech) <br />Grantee Carolina Commerce and Technology <br />Center, Inc. <br />Amount $155,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to provide a second year of operating <br />support to the Carolina Commerce and <br />Technology Center to assist with <br />planning, outreach, marketing, <br />management support, recruiting and <br />infrastructure development for this <br />technology -based approach to economic <br />development in the region. <br />Servicing Robeson, Hoke, Sampson, Scotland, <br />Cumberland, Bladen and Columbus <br />Counties <br />US Eventing Championships 2003 <br />Grantee Carolina Horse Park Foundation <br />Amount $50,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to provide operating assistance to <br />market and host the US Eventing <br />Championships in the fall of 2003 at the <br />Hoke County facility. <br />Servicing Hoke, Moore, Robeson and Scotland <br />Counties <br />2002 Awards <br />Golden LEAF is pleased to announce that the following North Carolina non - profits <br />and government entities were awarded grants in the last grant cycle (ending <br />November 2002). <br />• 30 grants were for projects that are agricultural in nature <br />• 19 grants were for economic development initiatives <br />• 35 grants were in the area of education <br />THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002 -2003 IS AUGUST 1, 2003 <br />S' <br />Gateway Technology Hub facility <br />Grantee Carolinas Gateway Partnership <br />Amount $315,120 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist with the development of a <br />Gateway Technology Hub Facility to <br />meet the needs of local employers and <br />employees for higher educational <br />training in business and technology. <br />Servicing Edgecomebe, Nash, Wilson, Halifax and <br />Northhampton Counties <br />MARTEC: 21st Century Job Opportunities <br />Grantee Carteret Community College <br />Amount $250,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will be used to <br />purchase equipment for the new Marine <br />Trade Technology Training Center to be <br />constructed on the campus of Carteret <br />Community College over the next two <br />years. Training programs will be available <br />to prepare individuals for job <br />opportunities in all phases of the boating <br />industry. <br />Servicing Southeast, Northeast and Eastern <br />Regions <br />Homegrown Teaching Scholars <br />Grantee Catawba Valley Community College <br />Amount $37,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to provide continued funding for the <br />"Homegrown Teaching Scholars" <br />program. The project will support the <br />following activities: (1) select 12 <br />candidates from Alexander County for <br />public school teacher education (classes <br />will begin at CVCC in 2003); (2) initiate <br />a recruiting campaign through career <br />exploration activities in middle schools; <br />(3) conduct summer enrichment <br />programs; and (4) develop case data to <br />support the long -term sustainability of <br />the program. <br />Servicing Alexander County <br />HMHEC — Providing Higher Education <br />Opportunities for Workers and Employers <br />in Transition <br />Grantee Catawba Valley Community College <br />Amount $175,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist Catawba Valley Community <br />College to work in collaboration with <br />Appalachian State University and Lenoir - <br />Rhyne College to provide expanded <br />learning opportunities for citizens of the <br />greater Hickory metro area to offset the <br />loss of manufacturing jobs in Catawba <br />County. The project will identify higher <br />education training needs for displaced <br />workers, target specific training to meet <br />skills required by existing employers, and <br />develop 15 training programs for a <br />minimum of 450 people that will <br />address the educational needs of workers <br />and employers. <br />Servicing Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba <br />Counties - <br />Expanding Small Business Lending <br />in Tobacco Dependent Counties <br />Grantee Center for Community Self -Help <br />Amount $200,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will provide a <br />second year of funding to the Center for <br />Community Self -Help to be used in <br />continuing a targeted program of <br />lending to small businesses in rural NC, <br />particularly those counties most affected <br />by the decline in the tobacco industry. <br />Servicing Eastern and Southeast Regions; Warren, <br />Harnett, Granville, Franklin, Yadkin, <br />Surry, Stokes, Rockingtham, Guilford, <br />Caswell, Halifax, Hyde, Martin, Beaufort, <br />Johnston, Person and Vance Counties <br />GOLDENLEAF 2002 Annual Report 13 <br />
