<br />that will become available at local
<br />businesses over the next two years.

<br />Systems program and implement the
<br />HEATT /Construction Equipment Systems

<br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is
<br />to assist with the development of a
<br />Gateway Technology Hub Facility to
<br />meet the needs of local employers and
<br />employees for higher educational
<br />training in business and technology.

<br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will be used to
<br />purchase equipment for the new Marine
<br />Trade Technology Training Center to be
<br />constructed on the campus of Carteret
<br />Community College over the next two
<br />years. Training programs will be available
<br />to prepare individuals for job
<br />opportunities in all phases of the boating
<br />industry.

<br />Homegrown Teaching Scholars
<br />Grantee Catawba Valley Community College
<br />Amount $37,000
<br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is
<br />to provide continued funding for the
<br />"Homegrown Teaching Scholars"
<br />program. The project will support the
<br />following activities: (1) select 12
<br />candidates from Alexander County for
<br />public school teacher education (classes
<br />will begin at CVCC in 2003); (2) initiate
<br />a recruiting campaign through career
<br />exploration activities in middle schools;
<br />(3) conduct summer enrichment
<br />programs; and (4) develop case data to
<br />support the long -term sustainability of
<br />the program.

<br />HMHEC — Providing Higher Education
<br />Opportunities for Workers and Employers
<br />in Transition
<br />Grantee Catawba Valley Community College
<br />Amount $175,000
<br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is
<br />to assist Catawba Valley Community
<br />College to work in collaboration with
<br />Appalachian State University and Lenoir -
<br />Rhyne College to provide expanded
<br />learning opportunities for citizens of the
<br />greater Hickory metro area to offset the
<br />loss of manufacturing jobs in Catawba
<br />County. The project will identify higher
<br />education training needs for displaced
<br />workers, target specific training to meet
<br />skills required by existing employers, and
<br />develop 15 training programs for a
<br />minimum of 450 people that will
<br />address the educational needs of workers
<br />and employers.

<br />Amount $200,000
<br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will provide a
<br />second year of funding to the Center for
<br />Community Self -Help to be used in
<br />continuing a targeted program of
<br />lending to small businesses in rural NC,
<br />particularly those counties most affected
<br />by the decline in the tobacco industry.
