The State Agriculture <br />Development Committee is already <br />working on its appropriations <br />proposal for next fiscal year, he <br />said. The money is appropriated <br />from bond issues. Since its start in <br />1981, the New Jersey program has <br />been funded through a series of <br />$50 million bond acts, leading up <br />to a 1998 referendum in which <br />voters committed $1 billion to split <br />between farmland and open space <br />protection, with the goal of <br />preserving one million acres. <br />In Ohio ... The Ohio Office of <br />Farmland Preservation just <br />completed its second round of <br />offers for FY03, preserving seven <br />farms with $3.1 million. This year, <br />the program will reach 10,000 <br />acres preserved, according to <br />director Howard Wise. Final <br />allocations for -FRPP grants-from: <br />the state's $2 million award had <br />not been announced at press time. <br />In North Carolina ... Orange <br />County is negotiating three <br />agricultural conservation ease- <br />ments in its Lands Legacy Pro- <br />gram, which uses easement and <br />fee purchases to protect farm and <br />natural resource lands. Bond and <br />general county allocations as well <br />as $800,000 in FPP funds has <br />helped the urbanizing county <br />protect 424 acres on three farms, <br />including a dairy, a beef operation <br />and a crop farm. The county has <br />now protected a total of 495 acres <br />of farmland.
