At that <br />time-the Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners wrote to Jim <br />Graham expressing concern, members of the BOCC met with represent- <br />atives of the Cattlemen's Association, and the Orange County Economic <br />Development Commission also expressed concern and offered assistance <br />No clear consensus developed at that time among the forming community <br />except that they indicated a preference for examining the possibili— <br />ties themselves. That still appears to be their position. It is <br />unclear how the market and the need for such a market is perceived by <br />the farming community, beyond its convenience as a place to sell <br />small numbers of animals. <br />i <br />Alternatives to the Hillsborough market include cattle markets <br />in SiLer City, Oxford and Danville. Recently Sitar City added a <br />second sale each week - on Monday — so it is now ins' direct <br />competition with Hillsborough on Mondays. Swine are increasingly <br />being sold under contract (like poultry), so the need for a swine <br />market may be disappearing. Quality horses are sold by private <br />contract, while horse culls are sold mainly at SiLer City. <br />A committee of the Cattleman's Association have written t( <br />ant of their plans. Goldkist hav, <br />Goldkist asking for a sta <br />tem <br />replied that they do not intend to operate a livestock market afte <br />the existing market clo <br />ses in 5 months. They have, however, offers <br />the building and equipment to anyone who intends to re— establish <br />Livestock market there. (A copy of Goldkist's reply is attached.) <br />
