Pitt Community College Associate Degree <br />Program in Biotechnology <br />Grantee Pitt Community College <br />Amount $161,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will enable Pitt <br />Community College to implement an <br />Associate Degree Program in <br />Biotechnology to serve as a training <br />program for DSM Pharmaceutical. DSM <br />Pharmaceuticals, located in Greenville, <br />is planning an expansion in 2003 that <br />will require 50+ lab technicians with a <br />biotechnology background and an <br />associate degree. This program also will <br />serve the needs of other area biotech - <br />related companies. Students completing <br />the Biotechnology Associate Degree <br />program at Pitt Community College will <br />have the opportunity to obtain the BS <br />degree in Biotechnology at East Carolina <br />University or any other UNC institution <br />with two years of additional study. <br />Servicing Pitt County and Eastern Region <br />Creating a Healthy Future Workforce <br />for Rural Communities <br />Grantee Pitt County Memorial <br />Hospital /University Health Systems of <br />Eastern Carolina <br />Amount $277,646 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist The University Health Systems of <br />Eastern Carolina, a division of Pitt <br />Memorial, with a second year of funding <br />to provide school nurses for ]ones and <br />Pamlico counties. The project will <br />employ and train school nurses who will <br />implement school health programs in <br />both counties as well as collect and <br />analyze data to be used to inform the <br />public and influence policy related to <br />school health. <br />Servicing ]ones and Pamlico Counties <br />Sandhilis Farm Marketing and Agritourism <br />Development Project <br />Grantee Richmond County Center of North <br />Carolina Cooperative Extension <br />Amount $24,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist Richmond County Cooperative <br />Extension with support and training for <br />Sandhills farmers seeking alternative farm <br />markets and region -wide promotion of <br />agri- tourism. Training will be provided to <br />farmers on topics such as hospitality, <br />pricing, business management and <br />cooperatives. Participants completing the <br />program will be eligible to apply for low - <br />interest loans through the USDA Rural <br />Development program. <br />Servicing Richmond, Montgomery, Anson and <br />Moore Counties <br />TEACHBuild <br />Grantee River City Community Development <br />Corporation <br />Amount $40,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist River City Community <br />Development Corporation in offering <br />training in financial literacy, information <br />systems, business development and <br />entrepreneurship to 10 to 15 at -risk <br />youth. In addition, the CDC will <br />implement an apprenticeship- training <br />program that includes GED preparation, <br />leadership training and skill development <br />in the areas of construction or <br />information systems technology. <br />Servicing Perquimans, Camden, Chowan, <br />Currituck and Gates Counties <br />Edgecombe County Mixed Use/ <br />I nclastrial Incubator <br />Grantee Rocky Mount /Edgecombe Community <br />Development Corporation <br />Amount $150,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to provide support for a mixed use <br />incubator to house industrial, <br />manufacturing, service, and technology <br />businesses. The facility will target low -to- <br />moderate income citizens and provide <br />space, resources, and services to <br />businesses and light manufacturing <br />enterprises to assist with start-up and <br />operations. <br />Servicing Nash and Edgecombe Counties <br />Viticulture /Enology A Growing Program <br />Grantee Surry Community College <br />Amount $150,000 <br />Project Funds from this Golden LEAF grant will be <br />used by Surry Community College for <br />continued development and advancement <br />of the wine grape industry in the Yadkin <br />Valley region. Training programs will be <br />offered through continuing education and <br />curriculum classes and specialized <br />technical assistance made available to area <br />farmers who are transitioning into wine <br />grape production. <br />Servicing Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, Wilkes, Watauga, <br />Davie, Guilford, Alamance and Forsyth <br />Counties <br />95 <br />Emergency Funding for Grape Harvest <br />Grantee Surry Community College <br />Amount $70,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF Grant is to be used by <br />Surry Community College to purchase <br />materials and grapes necessary to <br />process wine from this year's harvest of <br />the Old North State Winegrowers <br />Cooperative members. <br />Servicing Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, Wilkes, Watauga, <br />Davie, Guilford, Alamance and Forsyth <br />Counties <br />The Old North State Winery <br />Grantee The Old North State Winegrowers <br />Foundation, Inc. <br />Amount $280,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will enable Old <br />North State Winegrowers Foundation to <br />convert a 3- story, 22,000 sq. ft. building <br />in Mount Airy into an educational and <br />fully operational winery. The enterprise <br />will provide training in winemaking and <br />offer instruction in marketing, retailing <br />and accounting to prepare students with <br />vital technical and business skills. The <br />grant will fund the purchase of receiving <br />and' cellar equipment and a refrigeration <br />system; installation of a bottling line and <br />fermentation storage racks, chillers, tanks <br />and oak barrels; and the construction of <br />a tasting room and office upfit. <br />Servicing Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, Wilkes, Watauga, <br />Davie, Guilford, Alamance, Forsyth and <br />Nash Counties <br />Southeastern Robeson County: <br />Planting Seeds for the Future <br />Grantee Town of Fairmont <br />Amount $100,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will support the <br />Town of Fairmont, in collaboration with <br />Robeson Community College, in <br />providing adult education courses and <br />computer training to residents of <br />southeast Robeson County. The project <br />will expand the existing GED program to <br />include Adult Basic Education, Adult <br />High School, GED and computer classes <br />offered at the new Fairmont Community <br />Building. Training will prepare individuals <br />for entry-level positions and additional <br />advanced training opportunities in the <br />healthcare and computer industries. <br />Servicing Robeson County <br />20 Measuring Up <br />
