Senate <br />Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarships <br />Grantee North Carolina Independent colleges <br />and Universities <br />Amount $90,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will be used to <br />establish the Golden LEAF Scholars <br />Program for North Carolina Independent <br />Colleges and Universities. Funds will be <br />used to provide one -year scholarships at <br />$2,500 each for member schools (36 <br />total scholarships --one scholarship for <br />each school) covering tuition and fees. <br />Eligible recipients will be students who <br />reside in the top tobacco dependent or <br />Tier I counties in the state. Scholarships <br />will be need and merit based. <br />t. <br />Servicing Statewide <br />Creating a Statewide Community <br />Development Credit Union <br />Grantee North Carolina Minority Support <br />Center <br />Amount $100,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist the North Carolina Minority <br />Support Center with equity capital for <br />personal and commercial lending <br />through a new community based <br />financial institution, Generations <br />Community Credit Union, that will serve <br />families statewide. <br />Servicing Statewide <br />Sowing the Seeds and Cultivating the Soil <br />of Entrepreneurship <br />Grantee North Carolina REAL Enterprises, Inc. <br />Amount $53,806 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to assist North Carolina REAL Enterprises <br />with expanding its entrepreneurial <br />training program in seven tobacco <br />dependent counties to support farmers <br />and displaced workers who are in <br />transition and interested in business <br />ownership and expansion. <br />Servicing Martin, Madison, Columbus, Granville, <br />Vance, Warren and Bladen Counties <br />18 <br />Capital Access 11 <br />Grantee North Carolina Rural Economic <br />Development Center, Inc. <br />Amount $3,400,000 <br />Project This Golden LEAF grant will be used for <br />the second phase.of the Rural Economic <br />Development Center's Capital Asset <br />Program. Phase One of the CAP involved <br />more than 600 loans worth some $31 <br />million. Working with banks throughout <br />the state, CAP provides a loan -loss reserve <br />to allow banks to make loans to small <br />businesses in rural and economically <br />distressed areas that might otherwise not <br />qualify for credit at a reasonable rate. <br />The Rural Center expects this grant to <br />leverage nearly $100 million in loans. <br />Servicing Statewide <br />Civic Ventures Fund Demonstration —Phase ll <br />Grantee North Carolina Rural Economic <br />Development Center, Inc. <br />Amount $125,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to support the Civic Ventures Fund in <br />building the capacity of rural counties to <br />work collaboratively to plan, develop, <br />implement and evaluate sustainable <br />development projects that address issues <br />of local importance and produce clear <br />returns on Investment. <br />Servicing AdvantageWest <br />Improving Marketing Opportunities <br />for North Carolina Sweet Potatoes <br />and In -Shell Peanuts <br />Grantee North Carolina State University <br />Amount $64,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to expand market opportunities for in- <br />shell peanuts and sweet potatoes <br />through directed research that addresses <br />factors that limit current market <br />opportunities. The work will identify <br />strategies that enhance cultivar selection, <br />consumer appeal and purchase intent. <br />Servicing Eastern and Southeast Regions <br />Rapid Development of a Replacement <br />Cultivar for Sprite Melon <br />Grantee North Carolina State University <br />Amount $65,488 <br />Project The primary goal of this Golden LEAF <br />grant is to develop new specialty melons <br />for NC growers. Objectives include the <br />development of inbred lines with <br />performance at least as good as "Sprite" <br />and testing of hybrids made by crossing <br />complementary pairs of inbreds with the <br />ultimate goal of releasing a replacement <br />cultivar for the "Sprite" melon with <br />ownership and control in NC. <br />Servicing Eastern and Southeast Regions, <br />Northeast Partnership, Piedmont Triad <br />and RTR Partnership <br />9 1 <br />Use of Tobacco Transplant Houses <br />and Other Types of Greenhouse Structures <br />to Produce Alternative Crops <br />Grantee North Carolina State University <br />Amount $70,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to identify alternative crops for both <br />tobacco transplant and standard <br />greenhouses. Funds are to be used to <br />support the following activities: <br />(1) identify and test potential contract <br />crops for wetland restoration and water <br />garden plants in float bed houses; <br />(2) experiment with summer and <br />organic hydroponic production systems <br />for lettuce and basil; (3) set up <br />demonstrations comparing various types <br />of greenhouses, production systems and <br />alternative crops; and (4) disseminate <br />findings of the research. <br />Servicing Yancey, Graham, Wilson, Forsyth, <br />Stanley, Columbus, Richmond, Robeson, <br />Sampson, Scotland, Person, Wake, <br />Moore, Lee, Harnett, Randolph, Palk, <br />Union, Ashe and Burke Counties <br />Development of Value -Added Products <br />and Market Opportunities for North <br />Carolina Fruits and Their By- Products <br />Grantee North Carolina State University <br />Amount $71,000 <br />Project The purpose of this Golden LEAF grant is <br />to add value -added products, <br />technologies and markets for fruit <br />producers of the state. The project will <br />improve technologies for blending raw <br />materials from muscadine grapes, <br />blueberries, apples, strawberries and <br />peaches into juices, wines and non- <br />alcoholic beverages. <br />Servicing Statewide <br />Developing New Nursery Crops <br />for North Carolina <br />Grantee North Carolina State University <br />Amount $77,038 <br />Project The purpose of this project is to <br />continue expedited breeding efforts and <br />controlled hybridizations for diverse <br />nursery crops, including redbuds, <br />dogwoods, birches, rhododendron, <br />stewartias, styrax, sweetshrubs, stokes <br />asters, summersweet, barberry and <br />butterfly bushes. <br />Servicing Statewide <br />Measuring Up <br />
