DRAFT MEETING SUMMARY <br />AGRICULTURAL PRESERVATION BOARD <br />January 29, 2004 <br />PRESENT: Tony Kleese, Bob Strayhorn, Elizabeth Walters, Louise Tate, Whit Morrow, Marty <br />Mandell, Gordon Warren, Noah Ranells, Environment ,& Resource Conservation <br />Director, David Stancil, Preservation Planner, Tina Moon, and Carol Melton. <br />ABSENT: Don Johnson, and Rodney Recor. <br />ITEM #1: CALL TO ORDER <br />Kleese called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. <br />ITEM #2: CONSIDERATION OF ADDITIONS TO AGENDA <br />Stancil added an update on Agricultural Center work group concept. <br />Kleese noted that the Piedmont Farm Tour is scheduled for May 1 -2, 2004. <br />ITEM #3: APPROVAL OF MINUTES December 17, 2003 <br />MOTION: Gordon motioned approval as amended. Seconded by Tate. <br />VOTE: Approved unanimously. <br />ITEM #4: ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION <br />a. Presentation in February regarding "Orange County Survey" <br />Ranells explained that a UNC student group had conducted a survey of Orange County <br />farmers regarding conservation" practices, such as incentives for farmers to put land in <br />conservation easements, and wanted to share the information with the APB. He said the <br />student group is planning to attend and present their report at the February meeting. <br />b. Update - Ag Summit 2004 <br />The Agricultural Summit is scheduled for Monday, February 23rd at the Schley Grange Hall. <br />Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the program will end with lunch. The Agricultural <br />Summit Planning committee meeting scheduled for January 27th, 2003 at 10 :00 a.m. at EDC <br />conference room was postponed due to inclement weather. The APB Members reviewed the <br />planning committee's previous meeting summary and draft agenda. <br />Stancil noted the Agricultural Summit agenda item "Possibilities of New Agricultural Center" <br />was slated to be presented and would be explained more in a forthcoming BOCC directive for <br />the creation of an Agricultural Center Work Group. The work group mission would be to <br />evaluate needs and possible uses of an Agricultural Center in the county. <br />Mandell requested that the Agricultural Summit planning committee include 'Whole Foods Inc.' <br />in the agenda item "Market Opportunities ".
