Rent is paid for land enrolled in 10 -year, 15 -year, 30 -year, or permanent conservation <br />agreements. Bonus payments are made for 30 -year or permanent easements. Depending on <br />the length of the contract, implementation of best management practices may be cost shared. <br />North Carolina Agricultural Cost Share Program: This program, operated by the <br />Division of Soil and Water Resources, reimburses up to 75% of the average cost of <br />implementing best management practices, such as vegetative, structural, and management <br />systems, on your land. <br />YOUR NEXT STEP <br />Protecting your farm now and for future generations is important. There are options <br />available to sustain the viability of your farm and organizations that can help you implement <br />the tools that meet your needs. To learn more about your conservation options: <br />Contact your Extension Agent and Soil and Water Conservation District. Local <br />officials can help you implement good farm management practices based on the <br />characteristics of your land and the surrounding area. They can also refer you to other <br />agricultural support programs to 'enhance your farm's productivity and protect natural <br />resources. The phone numbers for your local Extension office and Conservation District are <br />in the county government section of your local phone book. <br />Contact your local land trust. Land trusts can help you design a conservation plan and put <br />you in touch with attorneys, financial advisers and land planners familiar with preservation <br />techniques. The Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC) can direct you to your local <br />land trust. The Land Trust Directory is available from CTNC and on the CTNC web site: <br />www.ctnc.org. <br />Contact your personal legal and financial advisers. This brochure is an introduction to <br />some of the land protection techniques available to landowners. The best conservation plan <br />will vary among tracts of land and landowners.
