.13 <br />Attachment 1 <br />PROPOSED UNC STUDENT PROJECT <br />"AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE AND HISTORY" <br />Staffs from the ERCD and Recreation and Parks have met to discuss a proposal received <br />from the UNC APPLES program (Assisting People in Planning Learning Experiences in Service). <br />A freshman English class is interested in exploring the County's historical perspective from an <br />agricultural standpoint, visiting with community residents and learning about farm practices from <br />previous generations. This might include deed research at some of the County's new park sites with <br />farm traditions (Cate, Blackwood), oral histories and other research. <br />More details on the project will be developed in the next few months. The project would tentatively be <br />conducted in the fall of 2003. Ideas on contacts, areas of emphasis or other subjects are <br />farming and farm history. welcome. <br />The results of this effort might be incorporated into festivals, books and future initiatives related to <br />----------------------------------------------------- <br />APPLES is a student - sponsored program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that <br />engages students, faculty, and other community partners in service- learning partnerships that <br />address social concerns and needs of North Carolina communities. <br />APPLES Service Learning: <br />I . Places students at the forefront of an active education through experience and reflection. <br />2. Links classroom learning and community work. <br />J. Advances UNC- Chapel Hill's commitment to teaching, research, and service. <br />4. Serves as professional development for student organizers and participants. <br />
