Too many people oil <br />different sides of the issue may be unwilling <br />to work together. <br />1 Need for regal clarification. If a decision sets <br />or challenges a legal precedent, people may <br />prefer to have a court decision. <br />1 Acceptable options. Community problem <br />solving works best when citizens can consid- <br />er a range of options. When legal, financial, <br />or technical realities limit creativity, starting <br />such a process may not be worthwhile and <br />might even increase frustration levels. <br />t <br />If you think collaborative community problem <br />solving makes sense, talk to others. Contact an <br />elected official, a town or planning board mem- <br />ber, someone in an influential local or state or- <br />gal:iization, and those working, with —or against <br />—you- on the issue. Think about the leaders in <br />your community who may be able to get oth- <br />ers to participate. Some local mediation centers <br />facilitate community problem solving or know <br />others who do.
