Now farmers are growing
concerned that their area has become
the home of, well, too many homes.
Many farmers find themselves
surrounded by neighbors who moved to
the country for peace and never
counted on the sounds and smells that
come with living near agriculture. The
same urban sprawlers who love
picturesque settings are far less
enamored about the odor of manure.
To keep tempers from flaring and
lawsuits from starting, Guilford County
leaders are considering a buyer- beware
law to protect both farmers and
developers of ruralland. The law would
create agricultural districts that would
serve as a red flag for home buyers,
alerting them that the county's next
subdivision could be within a whiff of a
cattle farm.
The move fits a bigger picture in North
Carolina and around the country, as
politicians try to manage growth without
hurting their tax base. The proposed law
is also timely in two other ways: It
meshes with efforts by the county and
the state to preserve open spaces, and
it comes as developers are planning the
huge Reedy Fork mixed -use
r.
Shop for
low trirsrtgaga riates @
Regional News:
Greensboro
High Point
Rockingham
Randolph
Fed Ex in the Triad
Get the latest news
on FedEx's proposal
to build a regional
shipping hub in
Guilford County.
Election 2000
Read about all the
candidates so you
can make an
informed decision
on election day.
Redistrictina Our
Schools
An In -Depth look at
the redistricting
process in Guilford
County.
Triad 2000
A multimedia
exploration of the
Triad's past,
present, and future.
R/21/2000 8:31 AM
