32
• After educating children and finding an effective treatment for cancer, voters were particularly
interested in spending additional federal dollars on using corn or other crops as a source of fuel.
Sixty -nine percent (69 %) of voters would like more federal spending to go toward finding an
economic way of producing fuel from corn or other crops.
Also, a majority of voters (53 %) would like to spend more federal dollars to keep farmland from
being developed. These voters are more likely to be women and people who are unmarried. Voters
in the Midwest region, persons ages 35 to 49 and voters who have children living in the home are
also more likely to say more money should be spent on protecting farmland from development.
TH' E T.A R .- :, E C: R! U L-ro
.Lne 2 —21, 2001 N= 1,024 / t 3.1 °/a M O.E `i71IPl /6't111 I *rrpy /lrrarl li first
Please tell me whether you favor spending more, less, or about
the same amount of money on each federal spending purpose.
Effectively educate children In public schools
Effective treatment for cancer
Find economical ways to use corn or other crops as fuel
Stop development of productive farmland
Farmers minimize use of chemicals
Help farmers store /dispose of manure
Protect wetlands on farms
Effective military defense
Good wildlife habitats on farms
0% 10% 207. 30% 407. 50% 6076 70% 80% 90 76100%
CMore ❑ Less ■About the same
• Research has indicated for some time that voters view clean drinking water as a personal safety
issue. Fifty -nine percent (59 %) of American voters surveyed for this study were willing to pay
additional taxes to keep our drinking water safe from agricultural pollutants. Those most likely to
feel this way include voters in the Midwest region, voters ages 50 to 64, urban area residents and
unmarried voters.
Page 4
