30 <br />Voters in the Midwest and Mountain states regions are the most concerned about the loss of <br />farmland due to development. Furthermore, a majority (52 %) want their food to come from their own state. These statistics <br />help explain pressures on the food industry to label products for their country of origin. <br />• Sixty percent (60 %) of American voters "sometimes" or "frequently" read labels before buying <br />products. Another 44% of voters say that they have bought products that are grown organically <br />within the last year. <br />Seventy percent (70 %) of voters report that they have bought something directly from a farmer <br />during the last year. Fifty -four percent (54 %) report that they have bought from a farmers' market <br />and 40% report that they have bought from a stand. These are high figures, reflecting a strong <br />undercurrent in the American marketplace. <br />Voters in the Northeast, South, and West regions are the most likely to purchase food directly from <br />a farmer, such as at a farm stand or farmers' market. Rural area voters and voters between the ages <br />of 35 and 64 are also more likely to purchase food directly. <br />• Seventy -eight percent (78%) of the American electorate is aware of the income support program to <br />our nation's farmers.
