5K
waystation and trailhead locations are identified in the coming at
Seven Mile Creek and potentially other locations.
What are the concerns or emerging issues your board has identified for the
upcoming year that it plans to address, or wishes to bring to the Commissioners'
attention?
• The County continues to have a need for gymnasium space that
exceeds the capacity of the Central Recreation Center. The County
rents space at two Orange County Schools just to run existing
basketball and volleyball programs, and there is evident demand for
increased activity for gymnasium space. The PRC encourages
discussions about the potential for finding additional gymnasium
access, perhaps through the Sportsplex expansion that is starting, to
help meet this pent -up demand.
• As part of the MST discussions, a proposed separate "multi -modal
trail" connecting Chapel Hill - Carrboro and Hillsborough has come
up. The PRC sees this as a concept that needs further assessment,
and offers that the biennial joint meeting of the county and municipal
parks and recreation boards is slated to occur in spring 2018, and
this might be a good vehicle for discussion of this idea.
• The joint development of a master plan for Millhouse Road Park is
needed, and the PRC requests that the Board seek a response from
the Town of Chapel Hill on a concrete schedule for planning this
facility.
• The PRC proposes to look at the possibility of short -term usage of
land- banked future park sites for other interim activities until such
time as the parks are built, and develop a report to the Board of
Commissioners on this topic during 2018.
