14 <br />• Historic Resources Inventory: Completed a two -year project to update the County's historic <br />resources inventory. The HPC obtained federal grants totaling $20,000 for this effort from the <br />State Historic Preservation Office, through the Certified Local Government (CLG) <br />program.(2016) <br />• Historic Courthouse Preservation Project: Provided research, guidance and scoping for AMS <br />to help develop the upcoming CIP project to preserve the historic Old County Courthouse <br />and the Courthouse Square (2013 -16) <br />• New Historic Landmarks: Designated four additional properties as Orange County Local <br />Historic Landmarks since 2013: the Dr. Arch Jordan House in Caldwell (2017); the White <br />Cross School in White Cross (2015); the Nicholas Corbett Hester House in Cedar Grove <br />(2015); and the Captain John S. Pope Farm in Cedar Grove (2013). This brings the total to <br />ten landmarks. <br />• Blackwood Farm Park: Provided assistance with the restoration work at Blackwood Farm <br />Park, including development of historical interpretive signage for the Strayhorn slave <br />cemetery (2015). <br />• Regional History Symposium: Held a successful piedmont regional history symposium in <br />partnership with Preservation Chapel Hill and the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough (2014) <br />• Hosted Statewide Traininq Workshop: provided a regional historic preservation training <br />workshop for local government planners and preservation staffers, in partnership with the <br />State Historic Preservation Office (2014) <br />• HPC Planning Retreat: Held a full membership retreat to review goals and establish a new <br />five -year action plan to focus the energies of the HPC on a series of major projects and <br />initiatives (2013) <br />• Hollow Rock Archaeology: Completed an archaeological survey (Phase ll) of Hollow Rock <br />Access Area (New Hope Creek Preserve) to further identify Native American sites. (2013) <br />• Orange County Historic Preservation /History Summit: Convened a day -long round table <br />discussion involving ten organizations (historic commissions, non - profits and museums) from <br />the county and municipalities (May 2012). <br />• Design Standards for Orange County Local Landmarks and Local Historic Districts <br />Completed to provide the HPC with comprehensive design review guidelines (2010) <br />List of Specific Tasks, Events, or Functions Performed or Sponsored Annually. <br />• Submits detailed annual report of all preservation activities to the State Historic Preservation <br />Office to meet federal and state requirements needed to maintain Orange County's status as <br />Certified Local Government, including mandatory member and staff training. This allows the <br />County to apply for special federal grants for historic preservation activities <br />• Partners with Preservation Chapel Hill, the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and other local <br />history groups to promote and encourage historic preservation as a tool to preserve and <br />enhance community character, slow down sprawl and encourage smart growth <br />• Administers the Orange County Local Historic Landmark Program, including reviews of <br />proposed restoration work or additions through Certificates of Appropriateness. <br />• Provides forum for public comments on nominations to National Register of Historic Places <br />• Conducts reviews of proposed new infrastructure projects that might have an impact on <br />historic resources, including cell towers, pipelines and transportation projects, in partnership <br />with the State Historic Preservation Office. <br />
