MINUTES <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES <br />October 16, 2017 <br />1 <br />THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MET ON MONDAY:October 16, 2017at the <br />Hillsborough Commons, Hillsborough, North Carolina. <br />BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS PRESENT:Ann Wilkerson,Pat Garavaglia,andEarl McKee. <br />GUEST:None. <br />BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERSABSENT:Tamara Dempsey-Tanner and Susie Enoch. <br />STAFF PRESENT: Nancy Coston, Director; Lindsey Shewmaker, Human Services Manager; and Sharron <br />Hinton, Human Services Manager. <br />I.Call to Order and Introductions <br />DSS Vice-Chair, Ann Wilkerson, called the meeting to order at 4:11p.m. <br />II.Board Comments <br />None. <br />III.Public Comments <br />None. <br />IV.Agenda Changes <br />None. <br />V.Action Items <br />On a motion byPat Garavaglia,the Board approved the minutes of September 18, 2017.Earl McKee <br />seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. <br />VI.Items for Discussion and/or Decision <br />1.Child Care <br />NancyCoston followed up on the enrollment of Family Success Alliance (FSA) families. After <br />meeting with them, FSA staff will start referring families and expect that there will be fewer than <br />thirty total children between now and June. <br />Earl McKee asked whether any groups have been discussing universal pre-K. Ms. Coston <br />responded that there has not been any discussion as part of this plan. Mr. McKee noted that he <br />hopes these efforts will start identifying potentially eligible kids because school readiness in pre-K <br />could have a great impact on many of these children. <br />2.SocialServices Board Work Plan <br />Lindsey Shewmaker went over the work plan submitted last year by the Social Services Board. <br />This will need to be updated by December.
