<br /> 31 <br /> <br />Chronic isease <br />Chronic disease refers to diseases that are long-lasting in nature (including cancer, type II diabetes, heart <br />disease, and stroke) and is one of the biggest causes of poor health. Although genetics and other factors <br />contribute to the development of chronic health conditions, individual behaviors play a major role. <br /> <br /> In 2013, nearly 50 million dollars was spent on cardiovascular and circulatory disease inpatient visits <br />in Orange County. <br /> <br /> Figure 22 shows the percent of survey respondents who have been told by a health care provider <br />that they have a chronic disease. <br />Cancer <br />While there hasn’t been a change in the overall cancer rate, Orange County has seen increases in <br />prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and female breast cancer. According to the National Cancer <br />Institute, it is estimated that nearly 80% of cancers are due to factors that can potentially be controlled <br />to reduce cancer risk. Controllable factors that contribute to the development of cancer include tobacco <br />and alcohol use, poor nutrition, unhealthy weight, physical inactivity, and exposure to radiation. <br /> <br /> 52% of all deaths in Orange County are caused by cancer, diseases of the heart, or chronic <br />respiratory diseases. <br /> <br /> Orange County has a lower age-adjusted cancer <br />death rate than NC averages in all categories <br />except for breast cancer (22.1 vs. 21.7 per <br />100,000 people)48. <br /> <br /> Cancer remains the top cause of death in the <br />County.
