<br /> 19 <br /> <br />attempts, history of depression or other mental illness, alcohol or drug abuse, family history of suicide <br />or violence, physical illness, and <br />feeling alone24. <br /> <br /> 51% of female and 39% of male <br />Orange County suicide victims <br />were characterized as being <br />currently depressed when they <br />completed suicide, as shown in <br />figure 13. <br /> <br /> Among survey respondents 3 out <br />of 10 have been told by a doctor, <br />nurse, or other health <br />professional that they have had <br />depression or anxiety. <br /> <br /> 54% of female and 46% of male suicide victims <br />was characterized as having a current mental <br />health problem. <br /> <br /> Females (23%) are more likely to attempt <br />suicide when compared to males (16%); <br />however, males are more likely to complete <br />suicide than females, as shown by figure 14. <br /> <br /> 1 out of 8 survey respondents stated that there <br />have been days in the past month when feeling <br />sad or worried have kept them from going <br />about their normal routine. <br />Substance Use/Abuse <br />Fewer adolescents in Orange County are using alcohol products or smoking cigarettes; however, there is <br />a marked increase in overall tobacco use among this group, primarily driven by the use of electronic <br />cigarettes and other novel tobacco products. Adult smoking appears to be stable, but alcohol use is <br />increasing. <br /> <br />Alcohol – Alcoholism is a medical disease that (1) involves periodic or constant impaired control over <br />drinking; (2) preoccupation with alcohol; (3) use and abuse of alcohol in spite of adverse consequences; <br />and (4) distorted thinking, especially denial. Alcoholism stems from genetic, environmental, and <br />psychosocial factors. Alcohol abuse is the intentional overuse of alcohol (to the point of drunkenness) <br />that includes occasional and celebratory over-drinking. <br /> <br /> Overuse of alcohol is considered to be more than 3-4 drinks per occasion for women and more than <br />4-5 drinks per occasion for men. <br />Figure 13: <br />Figure 14:
