NAME OF BOARD /COMMISSION Advisory Board on Aging 3 <br />Report Period January — December 2017 <br />ORANGE COUNTY ADVISORY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS <br />ANNUAL REPORT/ WORK PLAN FOR THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />The Board of Commissioners appreciates the dedication of all the volunteers on their boards and <br />commissions and welcomes input from various advisory boards and commissions throughout the year. <br />Please complete the following information, limited to the front and back of this form. Other background <br />materials may be provided as a supplement to, but not as a substitute for, this form. <br />Board /Commission Name: Advisory Board on Aging <br />Person to address the BOCC at work session- if applicable- and contact information: Margaret Cohn, <br />Advisory Board on Aging Chair peggycohn38 @gmail.com <br />Primary County Staff Contact: Janice Tyler, Dept. on Aging Director jtyler @orangecountync.gov <br />How many times per month does this board /commission meet, including any special meetings and sub- <br />committee meetings? The Advisory Board on Aging meets monthly. Members also participate in the Master <br />Aging Plan Steering Committee (Uper year) and participate in six MAP Implementation work groups <br />(quarterly meetings). There is board representation on the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee, <br />the Adult Care Home Advisory Committee, the Intergovernmental Parks and Recreation Commission, and <br />the OUTboard. <br />Brief Statement of Board /Commission's Assigned Charge and Responsibilities. <br />The Advisory Board on Aging suggests policy and makes recommendations to the Board of County <br />Commissioners and the Department on Aging while acting as the liaison between the older adults of the <br />county and county government. It is charged with promoting needed services, programs and funding that <br />impacts older adults. <br />What are your Board /Commission's most important accomplishments? <br />The Board oversaw the development of the 2017 -22 Master Aging Plan (MAP). In addition to the creation of the <br />2017 -22 the board continued work on completing the goals of the 2012 -17 MAP. Accomplishments include: <br />• 41 trained Project EngAGE graduates working on eight Senior Resource Teams (SRT). Highlights of <br />their work include hosting quarterly Faith Based Organization Outreach breakfast meetings; Aging In <br />Place seminars at the public library; held falls prevention classes at Eno Haven; held a second Death <br />with Dignity event at the Friday Center with 200+ attendees; and partnering with SALT (Seniors and <br />Law Enforcement Together) to expand community visitation program to 200+ older adults on a weekly <br />basis. Project EngAGE graduates have created two new non - profit organizations: Orange County <br />Rural Alliance (OCRA) was created to address rural senior hunger and has distributed over 3500 <br />meals in 2017. Dying Right NC was created to work on legislation to address end of life issues in NC. <br />• Exploration of new housing options in Orange County, including work with Habitat for Humanity <br />project for senior housing in Waterstone. <br />• Implementation of the OC CARES grant to expand services to caregivers and persons with dementia. <br />• Continued outreach to the older adults in the Latino community through the `social club' model. <br />• Continuation of two award programs to promote high quality services within long -term care <br />organizations - the Direct Care Worker Award and the Long Term Care Quality Service Award. <br />• Continuation of the Orange County's Dementia - Friendly Business Campaign recognized as the first in <br />the State. Partners include the Chapel Hill - Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, the Chapel Hill Rotary <br />Club and WCHL. Currently 75+ business /agencies and over 800 individuals have completed the <br />
