26

The event would be held in the morning at the Whitted Building, or another location, with a 1
breakfast and then sessions afterwards. The target date would be sometime after the Board’s 2
summer break. 3
4
Option 3: Combination of a live event in the fall with potential involvement of WCHL and 5
simulcast on the County’s government channel (1301) 6
The event would be held in the morning at the Whitted Building (or Southern Human Services 7
meeting room), with a breakfast and then sessions afterwards. The target date would be 8
sometime after the Board’s summer break. 9
The four topics below were initially developed for the one-hour discussions under Option 1, or 10
as a “choose one” for the Option 2 live event. Pending the Board’s preference regarding 11
Options 1, 2 or 3, the Board could choose to mix and match from among all four topics for the 12
Summit. 13
• Branding, Arts and Recreational Activities as Economic Drivers – The Orange 14
County/Chapel Hill Visitors Bureau recently completed an assessment of the 15
potential for a multipurpose sports/recreation facility. In addition, Orange County 16
already has existing assets (Soccer.com complex in Mebane and the Mountains to 17
the Sea Trail) that can be tapped to create more recreation-related tourism revenue 18
for the County. 19
• Agritourism and Local Agriculture – Orange County is home to many small 20
specialty farms that can attract visitors and create more economic output in the 21
County through more jobs (note the County hosts an Agriculture Summit each winter 22
that addresses many of these topics). 23
• Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Workforce Development and Job Creation – 24
What kind of jobs can we expect to bring to Orange County? UNC Hospitals and the 25
Hillsborough campus will create demand for more workers in the healthcare industry. 26
What is Durham Technical Community College doing to help meet this demand? 27
• Business/Industrial Recruitment or Other Hot Topic – In 2015, Orange County 28
Economic Development helped recruit Morinaga America Foods to a site in Mebane 29
for its first U.S. plant. In 2017, the County collaborated with the Town of Chapel Hill 30
to recruit a Wegman’s Supermarket to Chapel Hill. What is the County doing to 31
continue to attract new businesses and industries to the County. 32
33
Commissioner Price asked if there is an end product from this event, and the investment 34
of funds into it. 35
Todd McGee said Orange County is doing a lot with economic development, and 36
educating the residents about all that Orange County is doing is important. He said this would 37
be one of the benefits of this endeavor, and would allow the community to hear many of the 38
success stories. 39
Commissioner McKee said he would like to see the “business/industrial recruitment” 40
topic cover, including incentives that were used with Morinaga and Wegmans. 41
Commissioner Marcoplos said he liked option 3, taking place at Whitted and also having 42
a live feed. 43
Commissioner Rich said she also liked option 3, as it will provide an opportunity to 44
update the residents. She suggested using Facebook live during the event, as well as Twitter 45
too. She said the 6-week promotion would probably include having the Board of County 46
Commissioners doing radio promotion. 47
Todd McGee said the radio station would create a hash tag for the event in advance, 48
gather questions, and also do the Facebook live and Twitter. 49
