Orange County & NCDOT Highway Luncheon <br />Division 7 and District 1 <br />October 30, 2013 12:00 p.m. <br />11/07/13 <br /> <br />ii. Addressing Dangerous Roadway Spots in Rural Areas (bad curves without <br /> guard rails and such): Input has been solicited from the fire chiefs and may <br /> not be available by the time of the luncheon meeting (Craig Benedict, <br /> NCDOT) <br /> Addressing NCDOT staff, Craig Benedict stated that if there is any safety <br /> money available, the County still has some needs for improvements at <br /> dangerous curves. Barry Jacobs said that “dangerous curves” should be <br /> interpreted to mean places where there have been actual traffic accidents. <br /> Dawn McPherson stated that her office could collect data and develop <br /> recommendations for improvements. County staff added that they would <br /> communicate with Fire Chief Council about situations involving dangerous <br /> bridges, culverts, curves, etc. and we would prioritized provide a list to Dawn. <br /> Earl McKee stated that the main focus should be on situations where there <br /> are identified issues. <br />iii. Traffic light questions regarding the left turn lanes on MLK going north/west <br /> onto I-40, and at Orange Grove Road and New Grady Brown School Road. <br /> (Commissioner Barry Jacobs) <br /> Barry Jacobs described an existing left-turn problem with the traffic light on <br /> MLK at I-40. He stated that late at night, when traffic is very light, that a driver <br /> has to sit at the light for a very long time, and inquired if some signal revision <br /> could be done to address the problem. Several options and limitations were <br />discussed with Dawn McPherson and it was concluded that she would study <br />the situation and report back. <br />Barry Jacobs, Dawn McPherson and Margaret Hauth addressed school traffic <br />problems in the vicinity of the Grady Brown Elementary School and Cedar <br />Ridge High School, particularly at Orange Grove Road and Oakdale Drive, <br />and Orange Grove Road and New Grady Brown School Road.
