Old NC 86 Hwy Project with Bicycle <br />Improvements Map <br /> <br /> <br />Abigaile Pittman, Transportation/ <br />Land Use Planner, 919-245-2567 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />PURPOSE: Receive information and provide any comments the Board might have. <br /> <br />This update is in response to questions from the OUTBoard at its April 19, 2017 and <br />August 16, 2017 meetings regarding a proposed roundabout project at the intersection of <br />Old NC 86 and Homestead Road/Dairyland Road (aka Calvander), and the possibility of a <br />feasibility study on Old NC 86 for bicycle lanes. This update will provide greater detail about <br />a developing project proposal that relates to both of these issues, and the process for <br />generating and adding projects to official project lists. <br /> <br />The OUTBoard added the concept of a Calvander roundabout project to its recommended <br />list of proposed projects for the 2020-2029 Draft Statewide Transportation Improvement <br />Program (STIP) at its meeting on April 19, 2017. The OUTBoard suggested the roundabout <br />project at Calvander as a means to improve bicycle safety by eliminating left turns at this <br />intersection and approved the inclusion of this project on the preliminary project list <br />unanimously. The southeast, northeast, and northwest quadrants of the Old NC 86 and <br />Homestead Road/Dairyland Road intersection are included in the Carrboro Transition Area, <br />while the southwest quadrant is designated as Rural Buffer. <br /> <br />The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved the project list at its meeting on <br />May 2, 2017. A summary of the OUTBoard recommendation, including identification of the <br />Calvander project addition, was included in the BOCC abstract. <br /> <br />Then, at its August 16, 2017 meeting, there was request by an OUTBoard member to <br />inquire about the possibility of a feasibility study for a bike path from Carrboro to <br />Hillsborough, which would include the above referenced Calvander roundabout project in <br />the study area. <br /> 47
