There was
general agreement from the group.

The group discussed creating an ad on Orange County’s Facebook page with a link
to the Bicycle Safety website. Todd McGee stated that he thought the cost would be
around $50 for 2 weeks. There would be no ability to comment on the Facebook
page.

The group discussed using the County’s Twitter account to send out information on
bicycle safety related events. There are a broad set of followers on Twitter. Art
Menius noted that the Sheriff and Police put out a few messages on Twitter and we
need to have them send out messages as well. Heidi Perry and Alyson noted that
AAA also uses Twitter and they have a magazine that could be utilized for bicycle
safety messages.

Heidi noted that there is a man named Ken Mills that teaches/taught alert driver
classes that could get out bicycle safety messages.

The group discussed community events. Some ways to coordinate with community
events would be the WCHL community events page, the Visitor’s Bureau, and
Hillsborough’s Chamber of Commerce. Todd McGee suggested other partnerships
such at the Mountain-to-Sea group, and Orange County Schools. There are also
standard yearly events in the area such as Hog Day.

The group discussed a bicycle safety video contest. The group mutually agreed on
a video contest with County high school students, and that a monetary prize should
be offered to the winning group. They could use the prize money for equipment.
Amounts ranging from $250-$500 were suggested.

Todd McGee stated that WCHL can also do audio PSAs.

The group stated that expenditures for initial launch event(s) would include printing
costs, food, and giveaways.

D. Strategies for Future Subcommittee Meetings
1. Structure of topics, tasks and goals for next several meetings.

Follow-up assignments were given to group members:
Heidi Perry said she will look at possible target audiences for the video
contest and find good video examples.
Abigaile Pittman said she would determine the process for budget
submittals, and speak with NCDOT regarding the process, standards and
costs for street signs.
Alyson stated that she would research examples of graphics and materials
from other bicycle safety groups. She asked Abigaile Pittman to forward
her the materials that were reviewed in the BSTF subcommittee meetings.
42
