Box 8181 <br />Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: June 21, 2017 <br /> <br />TO: Orange Unified Transportation Board (OUTBoard) <br /> <br />FROM: Abigaile Pittman, Transportation/Land Use Planner <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Update Item 7c: Orange Grove Road Bridge Fencing <br /> <br /> <br />Safety Improvements at Orange Grove Road Bridge over I-40 <br />The bridge on Orange Grove Road (SR 1006) over I-40 provides the only access <br />between the Patriot’s Pointe apartment complex and a nearby mobile home park and <br />two schools, the Grady Brown Elementary School and the Cedar Ridge High School. <br />Originally designed only for automobile traffic, the bridge is consistently used by <br />pedestrians to access the schools despite the dangerous conditions for walking along <br />the roadway. <br /> <br />Funding for Safety Fencing <br />On May 9, Transportation Planning staff was advised by the NCDOT Division Engineer <br />for Division 7 that the funding for the proposed safety fencing on both sides of the <br />Orange Grove Road bridge over I-40 was on the agenda for funding approval at the <br />June 1, 2017 NCDOT Board of Transportation meeting (WBS 47418). Funding in the <br />amount of $100,000 has been approved from the Statewide Contingency Funds. <br />Orange County Planning staff will receive information about the schedule for the <br />installation of the fence from Division 7. This is a great step toward increasing the safety <br />of all road users along Orange Grove Road. <br />99
