SRTS Plan Next Steps Resolution Abigaile Pittman, Transportation/ <br />Land Use Planner, 245-2567 <br />Max Bushell, Transportation <br />Planner, 245-2579 <br /> <br /> <br />PURPOSE: Discussion and approval of next steps for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Plan <br />implementation, and forwarding of a Resolution to the BOCC for its consideration. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: <br />This item is deferred from the OUTBoard’s February 15, 2107 agenda. <br /> <br />A SRTS Plan BOCC Update was presented to the BOCC and the OUTBoard in the fall of <br />2016. Since late summer 2016 the Walkable Hillsborough Coalition has been in <br />discussions with the OUTBoard, NCDOT, the Town of Hillsborough, Orange County <br />Schools, and the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) <br />regarding options for identifying specific Plan projects and taking next steps towards <br />implementation. <br /> <br />At its September, October, November, and January meetings the OUTBoard received <br />presentations from representatives from the Walkable Hillsborough Coalition regarding the <br />group’s support for moving forward with the following SRTS Plan projects associated with <br />Grady Brown Elementary School and Cedar Ridge High School: <br /> Sidewalks along Orange Grove Road from Churton Street to Grady Brown Road; <br /> Improving safety on the I-40 bridge side railings, which are approximately 30 inches <br />high in violation of federal code guidelines of 42 inches for bridge structures; <br /> Crosswalks on Grady Brown Road and on Orange Grove Road; <br /> Flashing light at Grady Brown Road and Orange Grove Road; <br /> Pursuing a local match for Federal funding; and <br /> Clearly identifying next steps; <br /> <br />The Walkable Hillsborough Coalition petitioned the OUTBoard to support the identified <br />projects of the SRTS Plan as a priority and to present this request to the BOCC. At its <br />January 18 meeting, the OUTBoard unanimously supported the projects and requested <br /> 7
