Orange County Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Analysis | 6 <br /> <br />with one resulting in a fatality. The crash that occurred after 11:00 PM was also a fatality. Generally, <br />crashes tended to occur in the afternoon, with peak commuting hours accounting for higher numbers of <br />crashes. The crash data does not indicate a substantial difference in the day of the crash, though fewer <br />crashes occurred on Saturday, possibly as a result of less automobile traffic on rural Orange County <br />roads. <br />Overall, this analysis indicates certain notable trends about motor vehicle-bicyclist crashes in rural areas <br />of Orange County. More likely than not, bicycle crashes will result in some kind of injury, are the result <br />of a motorist overtaking the cyclist, and occur away from intersections during daylight conditions. While <br />intersection crash types are also notable for their frequency, crashes involving overtaking vehicles on <br />roadways without special <br />features constitute the most <br />common bicycle crash <br />during this time period. <br />Driver Crash Information <br />Information about bicycle <br />crash-involved drivers is also <br />provided in the crash data <br />and is part of the <br />information collected at the <br />scene of the crash by law <br />enforcement officials. <br />Orange County <br />Transportation Planning staff presents some of the key information about the drivers in this section. As <br />eight (8) out of 34 crashes, or slightly more than 20 percent of crashes, were hit and run crashes, <br />information about a subset of the drivers is not known.
