ORANGE COUNTY <br />ORANGE UNIFIED TRANSPORTATION BOARD <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date:March 21, 2018 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No.5.a. <br />SUBJECT:Bicycle Safety Implementation Subcommittee (BSIS) Report <br />DEPARTMENT:Planning and Inspections <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />1.Vertical Campaign Logo <br />2.Horizontal Campaign Logo <br />3.Black & White Campaign Logo <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Abigaile Pittman, Transportation/Land <br />Use Planner, 919-245-2567 <br />PURPOSE:Receive a reporton therecentactivities of the Bicycle Safety Implementation <br />Subcommittee <br />BACKGROUND:Since the BSIS report at the OUTBoard’s February 21st meeting, the <br />subcommittee has been busy working on the following activities: <br />Highlights of our workinclude: <br />x Production of Campaign Videos – Filming of four bicycle safety video PSAs began on <br />March 10, and will continue on the weekend of March 17-18. The Video Club students at <br />Cedar Ridge High School assisted in the development of the video storyboards, and will <br />assist with filming and editing.Several professionals have also committed their time and <br />equipment to the video productions, and there are a number of community volunteers <br />contributing to the effort as well. New Hope Trace road was chosen as the location for <br />the videofilming, due to the ability to secure both ends of the road, the road’srecent <br />paving, thedouble yellow line, and that the church at the corner is allowing us to use their <br />facility for the group to gather during the filming. The videos will be approximately 15- <br />second PSA’s with the following themes: <br />1.It’s Never Too Early’ addressing teaching young children about bicycle safety and that <br />when passing a bicyclist in a no-passing zone, the operator of the passing vehicle <br />must allow four feet of space or change lanes; <br />2.‘Reluctant Driver’ addressing that when safe for the cyclist to do so, a cyclist can <br />facilitate passing by pulling over; <br />3.‘Emergency Vehicles’ addressing that cyclists must always pull over and stop for <br />emergency vehicles using its sirens and lights; and <br />4. ‘Passing Groups’ addressing that riding two abreast is legal in North Carolina and can <br />often create more visibility and shorten the passing distance needed. <br />x Campaign Logo – A Campaign logo has been selected. Three versions of the logo <br />(vertical, horizontal, and black & white. will be utilized on signs, the website, posters and <br />brochures, and various swag items. See Attachments 1, 2 and 3.
