Why transition? What’s changing?
Improve clinical communication and
documentation

Capture data (signs, symptoms, risk
factors and comorbidities) to better
describe the clinical issues overall

ICD-9 cannot accommodate addition of
codes to reflect new diagnosis and
procedures

Exchange information across country
borders

ICD-9 codes are currently 3 to 5 digits
alphanumeric whereas ICD-10 codes
will be 3 to 7 digits alphanumeric and
more specific.

Only ICD-9 codes are changing to ICD-
10. CPT (Current Procedural
Terminology) and HCPCS (Healthcare
Common Procedure Coding System)
codes are not affected by this
transition.

About ICD-10-CM (continued)
